Summary

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our West Midlands Asset Performance team. We manage flood risk assets across Shropshire and Herefordshire to ensure they protect our communities from the risk of flooding. You will be part of a team managing the whole lifecycle of our flood risk management assets, i.e. planning, delivery, maintenance and decommissioning.

Your enthusiasm and positive attitude will help you find solutions that deliver our priorities. You will help manage our asset data to ensure it is of the best quality and can be relied on to inform our future investment programme. This will include site work to understand our asset base and to collect, analyse and interpret information to ensure we manage it well. You will be trained to undertake inspections of our assets.

We are seeking applicants with a passion for asset management or engineering and a drive to protect our communities at risk of flooding.

The role duties will include (but not exclusive to):

Engaging in management of our assets by collecting and processing data to ensure the required standards are met and maintained.
Supporting colleagues to gather information to produce work orders for our internal field teams
Carrying out Public Safety inspections
Carrying out asset condition assessments
EIR/FOI & Correspondence
Responding to incidents is a central part of what we do. You will be required to take on an incident role and be available to support incident response when needed. This may attract additional payment, and full training and any necessary workplace adjustments will be provided.

The team

This is an office‑based role; however, around three days each week will be spent on sites across Shropshire and Herefordshire in all seasons. This fieldwork involves extensive walking, often across uneven or challenging terrain, and is a major part of the role. The remaining time will be spent in our Shrewsbury office for planning, data work, and team collaboration. There may be opportunities for flexible working, with your line manager’s agreement.

Experience/skills required

We welcome applications from passionate individuals with transferable skills, and we encourage you to apply even if you don’t have a degree or direct experience in this sector.

What matters most is your ability to build strong relationships with internal and external customers, work effectively both independently and as part of a team, and make sound decisions to achieve planned outcomes.

You should be confident in planning, tracking, and maintaining accurate data, with good organisational skills and the ability to use MS Office and learn bespoke IT systems.

Strong communication skills are essential, as you will be working with a wide range of people. An understanding of flood‑risk assets or asset management is desirable but not essential, as full training will be provided.

You must hold a full UK driving licence and have access to your own vehicle with business insurance.
