About the Client
Redbridge Council’s Housing Needs service supports residents with allocations, lettings, homelessness prevention and access to suitable accommodation. The Housing Supply Team plays a key role in ensuring properties are allocated lawfully, efficiently and in line with statutory duties and local policy.

The Role
This specialist role is responsible for allocating permanent and temporary accommodation in accordance with Part VI of the Housing Act 1996, the Housing Allocations Scheme, and the Temporary Accommodation Placement Policy. The postholder will manage shortlists, complete direct matches for vulnerable applicants, verify eligibility, and provide comprehensive housing advice to applicants awaiting rehousing or being placed into accommodation.

Key Responsibilities
Allocating permanent homes through choice‑based lettings and direct matching

Verifying shortlisted applicants’ circumstances, eligibility, finances and suitability

Conducting interviews, home visits and desktop checks as part of the verification process

Matching applicants with medical needs, under‑occupiers, management transfers, sheltered applicants and hospital discharge cases

Arranging viewings and progressing offers through to sign‑up

Allocating temporary accommodation, PRSOs and prevention placements in line with policy

Providing housing advice on mobility schemes and alternative housing options

Updating Personalised Housing Plans and maintaining accurate case records

Liaising with hospitals, RPs, landlords, internal teams and external agencies

Managing refusal processes and supporting suitability assessments

Ensuring compliance with legislation, guidance, and Redbridge policies

Supporting customers with complex needs through appropriate referrals

Candidate Requirements
Strong knowledge of Part VI Housing Act 1996, Homelessness Reduction Act 2017, Children Act, Care Act and Welfare Reform Act

Experience in housing allocations, homelessness, or housing needs services

Ability to work in a demanding frontline environment with vulnerable customers

Strong interviewing, assessment and verification skills

Excellent communication skills across face‑to‑face, telephone and written channels

Ability to manage caseloads, meet deadlines and maintain accurate records

IT literate with experience using housing systems

Flexible, solutions‑focused and able to work independently
