Overlooking the iconic River Thames, Barking Riverside is founded on an ambitious vision for what good development can achieve. One of the most exciting new developments in Europe, the project will help transform a 443-acre brownfield site into a new London district everyone can be proud of. Co-created in close partnership with existing residents, the area is growing to become an exciting and vibrant neighbourhood of up to 20,000 homes, commercial and leisure space, new schools and facilities, public open spaces, and riverside walks. Connectivity has already been enhanced by a new London Overground station and an UberBoat by Thames Clippers pier.


The project is being delivered by master developer Barking Riverside Limited (BRL), a joint venture between L&Q and the Mayor of London. BRL are partnering with local people, stakeholders, plot developers, and industry leading consultancies and experts to help create a place that is ‘Barking Made’, with pride and purpose for everyone.


The Director of Estates is a key leadership position in the BRL team who will take full responsibility for the management of the public realm at BRL including public buildings and the let commercial properties, ensuring these are managed professionally whilst providing good value for money for BRL and the Barking Riverside Residents.

The role requires strong operational skills and extensive knowledge of residential service charges, the legal framework and how this is implemented in practice. Specifically, experience in a complex estate wide service charges and working with multiple residential developers/landlords is desirable.

This role also demands a strategic approach, looking forwards to influence the development of Barking Riverside to support the BRL Boards aim to deliver a place that not only delivers high quality housing and public spaces, but a legacy to be proud of.

The role also entails helping to establish and supporting the resident led Barking Riverside Community Interest Company, providing the executive function during their formation years and supporting them to becoming a self-sufficient body that can take on the long-term stewardship of the Barking Riverside development.

Skills and Experience:

An experienced commercial thinker, able to understand contracts and drive performance. Able to demonstrate and build a culture of excellence in stakeholder management.
Extensive experience of Estate management and service charging within the regeneration, development and housing sectors or other large estate owner/land manager.
A sector specialist with extensive knowledge of the legal and financial frameworks of residential service charges and able to demonstrate extensive financial and commercial acumen, including associated risk management skills at the highest level.
Highly developed ‘people management’ skills, able to lead, motivate and inspire others at all levels to deliver against demanding objectives.
Highly developed communication skills, able to produce quality materials and deliver to a wide range of stakeholders, adapting to the audience as needed.
Degree (or equivalent) in relevant business / estate, land or housing management discipline and/or demonstrable experience in delivery at this level.
Professional body (MRICS or equivalent) accreditation in development, estate, land or housing management is desirable.
