Overview
Our client is a UK-based cyber security business operating in the supply chain and vulnerability scanning space. Following continued commercial growth and increased enterprise engagement, they are strengthening platform stability and internal engineering capability. This hire exists to improve reliability, the core product is built in Ruby on Rails and is live with paying customers. As usage increases, the focus is on resolving bugs efficiently, improving code quality, and ensuring the platform behaves consistently under load. This is not a greenfield build, it is a hands-on stabilisation and improvement role inside a growing cyber technology environment.
Role Purpose
To take ownership of bug fixing and incremental improvements across an existing Ruby on Rails platform, ensuring issues are resolved efficiently and the application remains stable, secure, and production-ready as customer demand increases.
Key Responsibilities
Investigate, diagnose, and resolve bugs within a live Ruby on Rails codebase
Deliver small enhancements and refinements to improve platform reliability
Work closely with the technical lead to prioritise and deploy fixes
Support internal teams where platform issues affect customer delivery
Contribute to improving documentation, structure, and overall code quality
Must-Have Experience
Commercial experience working with Ruby on Rails
Strong debugging and troubleshooting capability
Experience working within an existing production codebase
UK-based with ability to attend initial on-site onboarding in Birmingham
Nice to Have
Experience within SaaS or cyber security environments
Familiarity with Linux environments
Exposure to virtualised infrastructure or cloud-based hosting
Experience working in small, fast-moving engineering teams
What Good Looks Like
30 Days
Understand the architecture and core modules of the platform
Successfully resolve smaller bugs independently
Demonstrate clear communication with the technical lead
60 Days
Confidently handle more complex bug investigations
Begin identifying recurring stability issues and suggesting improvements
Reduce backlog items through consistent delivery
90 Days
Fully embedded in the engineering workflow
Owning bug triage and resolution process
Contributing to platform reliability improvements beyond reactive fixes
Working Style and Culture Fit
Comfortable working within a close-knit, founder-led environment
Pragmatic, delivery-focused mindset
Clear communicator, able to explain technical issues simply
Ideally able to spend initial time on-site in Birmingham before moving to a more flexible hybrid arrangement
Interview Process
Initial Teams call
Technical discussion with Head of Tech
Final conversation focused on delivery approach and cultural fit
Notes / Constraints
UK-based candidates only
Must be comfortable working within a security-conscious environment
This role is focused on bug fixing and platform reliability rather than new feature ownership
