About Ava
Ava is a bright, determined young woman who is moving from hospital to living independently in her own home. She has a lively personality, a sharp sense of humour, and a deep passion for advocating for autistic people. She delivers autism training across West Sussex and Brighton & Hove and is actively involved in campaigns and activism promoting human rights and inclusion.
Music is central to Ava’s life: She’s in a band, writes politically minded lyrics, plays electric guitar, bass, and drums, and enjoys singing. She is especially looking for support workers who are musically gifted, able to play guitar, sing, or study/produce music and who can actively share and engage with her passions.
Ava wants support workers who understand neurodiversity, ideally with professional or personal experience in the field. She values a compassionate, human-centred approach and wants people who are willing to learn from her. Ava is autistic and has a moderate learning disability, anxiety, OCD, and pathological demand avoidance, which can sometimes lead to behaviours of distress. She also has a sleep disorder, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, Raynaud’s, and well-controlled epilepsy.
Ava works well with support workers who prioritise her wellbeing and work with her, not for her. She values support that is collaborative, respectful, and adapted to her as an individual, led by her needs, choices, with an understanding that there may be times when she needs calm, supportive guidance during periods of overwhelm.
This role requires someone who understands that good support is relational and flexible. Ava is looking for a support worker who can engage with her as an equal, seeing her as a person first and not just through plans and paperwork.
A humane, trauma-informed approach is essential, as is the ability to treat Ava as you would any other adult: with respect, honesty, and autonomy, while also bringing patience, understanding, and compassion during more complex or difficult moments.
Who We’re Looking For
We’re looking for support workers who are kind, reliable, and easy to get along with. The key focus of this role is musical talent. The ideal candidate will:
Be musically gifted: able to play guitar, sing, or study/produce music, and excited to actively share and engage with Ava’s musical passions.
Have professional or personal experience in neurodiversity or a passion for supporting autistic people
Be able to drive to support Ava’s mobility needs.
Be patient, open-minded, and happy to follow Ava’s pace, respecting her needs and preferences.
Be flexible, relational, and humane. Not rigid, by-the-book, or overly reliant on external authority.
Have an upbeat, adaptable personality and a sense of humour, making them easy to work with.
Above all, Ava values genuine people. Those who can be themselves, build real connection, and support her in a natural, honest way rather than through a scripted or performative approach.
In short, we’re looking for someone who will work collaboratively with Ava, respecting her as the expert in her own life while supporting her to live fully, pursue her passions, and thrive in a safe, trauma-informed environment.
Full UK driving license is required for this role. Experience in a similar role is preferred but not essential.
Full training will be provided through Seco Supports induction programme and online learning. Full referencing and a full enhanced check of the Disclosure Barring Service (DBS) will be required for this position.
