We are looking to offer an opportunity to join our team in general surgery for 12 months as a specialty doctor. You will be responsible for supporting a team of general surgeons to deliver general surgery upper and lower GI services to patients in the local area. You will be part of a 1:9 on call rota delivered at Queen's Hospital Burton.
You should have full GMC registration and at least 4 years full time postgraduate experience or equivalent, one year in the NHS would be desirable. You should be experienced in making clinical decisions and have proven practical skills with an up to date clinic knowledge of general surgery.
To provide General Surgery services to Derby, East Staffordshire and surrounding areas, with colleagues with responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of patients and the proper functioning of the department at middle grade level.

We are the 4th busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic outpatients department in England – an average of 2077 per week.

UHDB is a research active University Hospital with a large and varied portfolio of clinical trials and research opportunities for all staff.
I. To provide General Surgery services to Derby, East Staffordshire and surrounding areas, with colleagues with responsibility for diagnosis and treatment of patients and the proper functioning of the department at middle grade level.
II. To have responsibility for the continuing care and treatment of patients and personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan and teaching of staff in training, and the multidisciplinary team.
III. Maintaining flexible arrangements for emergency cover
ii. Responsible for the continuing care & treatment of patients in your charge & personal performance of clinical duties as agreed in your job plan, allowing for all proper delegation to & training of your staff.
iii. Provision of an out-of-hours service with consultant colleagues including on-call rota commitments.
iv. Active participation in undergraduate & post graduate education, including training sessions for doctors in training, medical students and other healthcare staff in the specialty.
vi. Responsible for the professional supervision, training & management of junior medical staff, carrying out teaching, examination & accreditation duties as required & contributing to postgraduate & CPD activity locally & nationally as appropriate.
vii. Participate in clinical audit under local arrangements.
viii. Commitment to entering patients into MRC trials where appropriate (if the appointee has an interest in research this would be supported by the Trust & the Division).
ix. Commitment to taking part in annual appraisal process
x. Responsible for compliance with personal continuing professional development requirements with the support of the Trust.
xi. Responsible for maintaining awareness of & acting in accordance with professional guidelines such as “Duties of a Doctor”, “Good Medical Practice”, & the “GMC Performance Procedures” .
xiii. Exceptional requirements to undertake additional duties for limited periods within geographical area specified above or undertake duties at other hospitals in the event of a major disaster or incident.
