Summary

The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.

You will be joining the External Affairs function within Environment and Business (E&B) which has transformed the way we engage across the Directorate, into the wider organisation, and with external stakeholders including government, partners, and the media. This is a high-profile team, and we’re looking for someone to lead on event planning and coordination across E&B – working across the business and creating greater join-up across the organisation.

As an External Affairs Advisor, you will help to promote the work of the Environment Agency to our target audiences; including the public, key stakeholders, and government. You will be part of a small team responsible for oversight of our stakeholders in E&B (joining up with the wider business) and supporting senior leaders with their external engagement. This might also involve leading on briefings, drafting speeches, and proactively advising on future engagement opportunities.

You’ll need to be a proactive problem solver who is able to manage a broad portfolio of work and help the business thrive. You will need to be a self-starter with excellent influencing and relationship skills. You will be able to think differently and drive better ways of working within the organisation and wider. The ability to work under pressure, be highly organised, and handle competing demands, whilst delivering first-class communications and engagement products, will be essential.

The team

You’ll join our Stakeholder Oversight Team. We ensure the E&B Directorate has the tools and support it needs to carry out effective external engagement with our top stakeholders.

We’re a dispersed team who work with a range of teams across the country.

In E&B we promote a positive, inclusive, and supportive culture where everyone feels valued. We use evidence, expertise, engagement, and innovation to enhance and support delivery, influence policy, legislation, and secure resources.

Experience/skills required

In your capability-based answers please demonstrate you:

Have previous experience of event planning/stakeholder management/advising senior leaders on their external engagement with stakeholders.
Can prioritise and deliver work to time and quality standards, focusing on customer needs.
Are well-organised/focused; work can be reactive and varied so a flexible work style/pace is essential.
Can communicate clearly and effectively, with the ability to build relationships/collaborate at all levels.
Have outstanding organisation and multi-tasking skills.
Have a positive attitude and the ability to work independently.
Can work effectively with people from a variety of backgrounds and cultures and actively encourage others to consider diversity issues in their work.

You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
