Summary

To ensure learners are safe in college and to support their wellbeing and care
To ensure learners, staff, visitors and college premises are safe and secure
To ensure in the safety and security and care of College users and the protection of the facilities
To contribute towards supporting the college’s zero tolerance of Sexually Harmful Behaviours and Peer on Peer abuse, identifying, challenging and reporting, being a role model
To serve as one of the College’s Designated Senior Individuals for Martyn’s Law
To ensure the Student Safety Team provides comprehensive coverage of campuses
Key Responsibilities
Maintain a safe, positive and inclusive environment by providing a consistent and visible presence across campus; actively promoting and role‑modelling expected standards of conduct; and identifying, addressing and intervening early where behaviours fall short of the College’s values, policies or code of conduct
Support management of incidents, recording factually and promptly, including reviewing CCTV, sharing relevant information with the Safeguarding team as required
Support early help by promptly identifying low‑level concerns, noticing changes in demeanour or emerging behaviour patterns, and taking timely action to prevent escalation
Take the lead in undertaking searches of students for prohibited items, ensuring actions are lawful, proportionate and in line with safeguarding legislation and statutory guidance; maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of, and ensure full compliance with, the College’s Search Protocol; and ensure all searches are conducted in a safe, respectful and trauma‑informed manner that protects the dignity and welfare of learners
Maintaining the health, safety and welfare of College employees, learners, visitors and customer by controlling and managing student behaviour, preventing unauthorised access, removing trespassers from the premises, protecting people from harm/injury, hazard spotting and reporting, removing hazards that may cause harm to others, coordinating safe evacuations, ingress and egress, supporting the implementation of policies e.g. no smoking policy
Provide good customer service to College staff, students, visitors and customers, by assisting with queries, providing direction, supporting the enrolment process, supporting staff to manage student behaviour in the classroom
Patrolling the College grounds and buildings to provide a visible and a reassuring presence. Protecting the College assets (buildings, cash, equipment, resources) from malicious damage or theft
Support the college in ensuring that students and staff display their college ID badge at all times
To liaise as necessary with emergency services when required
Monitor driving and parking on campus and address dangerous driving incidents, recording details of illegal, dangerous and inconsiderate parking on campus, carparks and around the environment
Representing the College within the local community, liaising in a constructive manner with local residents, and ensuring that students are not causing a nuisance outside the College
Contributing to the elimination of unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation; advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not
Support the process of regular Fire Alarm testing as specified in testing procedures, under the instruction of Health and Safety
To contribute towards the business continuity group on a regular basis
To work with third parties who support the college on a regular basis
Budget control of the student safety team
To lead and develop the Student Safety Team through the college’s performance cycle
Any other duties as reasonably directed by the college
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Qualifications / Special Work Conditions
Essential Criteria
Good literacy and numeracy skills (minimum level 2)
Educated to a level 3 standard
Driving Licence
Able to work flexibly including evenings and weekends

Emergency First Aid qualification or a willingness to obtain it.

SIA licence in security guarding (or willingness to be trained).

Experience of working with young people in an educational or community environment

To show Basic Conflict Management Skills and to have a good understanding of the Security & Education Industries
Experience of working under pressure, including handling difficult situations on your own and de-escalating them
