We are looking for physically capable, motivated, caring and compassionate individuals who to join the Non-Emergency Patient Transport Service (NEPTS) at Barts Health as Patient Transport Drivers (PTDs).
Our NEPTS is available for patients who cannot travel to or from our hospitals using any other method of transport because of their medical or mobility condition, or because their medical condition would otherwise worsen. All requests for patient transport are assessed on medical need. Transport is only provided for patients coming from their home addresses to North East London NHS Trust locations. Transport is also provided for patients going home from a North East London NHS Trust locations to a booked address stated by the ward or clinic anywhere in the mainland UK.
2 Years driving experience and full manual UK driving license required
The NEPTS Patient Transport Driver performs a key role in providing a safe transport service for patients attending appointments and procedures at our Trust’s hospitals.
Patient Care
Patient Transport Drivers should ensure that all patients are safely transported in a timely manner, whilst being treated with dignity and respect. They will undertake dynamic risk assessments of patients and their environment, work to the highest standards and be diligent in reporting defects and patient related concerns (such as safeguarding). Should a patient become unwell in their care, PTDs will treat and care for their patient within the scope of their training and recognise when to escalate to the emergency services.
Lifting, Moving and Handling
A Patient Transport Driver is expected to be physically fit, healthy and capable of undertaking their full contracted role involving significant moving and handling of patients and equipment. PTDs duties include transferring patients to and from their homes and vehicle, from homes and apartments, using a variety of equipment based on the patient’s mobility needs (including carry chairs, wheelchairs, stair climbers or stretchers).

Driving Duties
Patient Transport Drivers must have at least 2 years driving experience and hold a full manual driving licence. Those applicants with points and endorsements will be asked to declare them in their application. These declarations will be checked, and applicants may not be successful if their licence status is deemed to not align with the requirements of the role.
PTD duties also include driving Trust vehicles, in a manner that provides a safe and smooth journey for their passengers, following the highway code. They will ensure that their vehicles are roadworthy, fully equipped, fuelled and maintained in a clean and tidy manner. reporting immediately any defects or accidents.
