Summary

Electrical Engineering Technician //

FT - 36 hrs per-week

Salary PA up to £33,000



Job Purpose

To provide high-quality technical support to staff and students within the Electrical Engineering department. The postholder will support the delivery of practical teaching and learning activities, maintain workshop facilities and equipment, and ensure compliance with health and safety legislation to create a safe and effective learning environment.



Responsibilities

1. Technical Support for Teaching & Learning

Prepare, set up, and dismantle equipment and materials for practical sessions in Electrical Engineering (e.g., installation rigs, control panels, motors, PLC systems, testing equipment).

Provide in-class technical support during practical sessions.

Demonstrate safe use of tools, equipment, and testing instruments where required.

Assist students with the use of workshop equipment under the direction of teaching staff.

Support practical assessments and examinations as required.



2. Equipment & Workshop Management

Maintain, service, and calibrate electrical and electronic equipment.

Diagnose and repair faults in training rigs and workshop equipment.

Maintain stock levels of consumables and components.

Source and order materials in line with college procurement procedures.

Maintain accurate records of equipment servicing, PAT testing, and inventory.



3. Health & Safety

Ensure compliance with Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant regulations (e.g., Electricity at Work Regulations, PUWER, COSHH).

Carry out and support risk assessments for practical activities.

Ensure safe storage of tools, equipment, and hazardous materials.

Support safe working practices within workshops and laboratories.

Report hazards, incidents, and near misses in accordance with college procedures.



4. Quality & Compliance

Support awarding body requirements (e.g., City & Guilds, EAL, BTEC, T Levels).

Assist with preparation for internal and external audits/inspections.

Contribute to continuous improvement of workshop facilities and learning resources.



5. General Duties

Support open days, enrolment events, and employer engagement activities.

Maintain a clean, organised, and professional workshop environment.

Undertake relevant training and continuous professional development.

Comply with all college policies including safeguarding, equality and diversity, and data protection (GDPR).



Essential Qualifications

Level 3 qualification in Electrical Installation, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline.

Level 3 Award in Inspection & Testing (2391 or equivalent) or willingness to work towards.

GCSE Maths and English (Grade C/4 or above) or equivalent.



Desirable Qualifications

HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.

Recognised Health & Safety qualification (e.g., IOSH).

Assessor qualification (e.g., TAQA/A1).




Essential Experience

Experience working in the electrical industry (e.g., installation, maintenance, manufacturing, or engineering).

Experience maintaining electrical equipment and tools.

Knowledge of current electrical regulations (e.g., BS 7671 Wiring Regulations).

Understanding of safe workshop practices.
