Summary

Safety & Risk Manager

Make safety more than a policy. Make it a culture.

We’re looking for a confident, credible Safety & Risk Manager to lead the safety, fire and risk agenda at HMP Northumberland — one of the UK’s largest justice sites.

This is a high-impact role where you’ll work alongside the prison Director and senior leadership team to embed a strong, visible safety culture aligned to our commitment:
Target Zero Harm Every Day – Safe People, Safe Places and Safely Home.

You won’t just advise — you’ll influence, challenge and drive real operational improvement.

What you’ll be responsible for
  • Acting as the site’s Competent Person for fire and health & safety compliance

  • Embedding effective governance, risk and compliance frameworks

  • Leading the integrated BS 9997 fire risk management system and ensuring fire strategies and risk assessments remain robust and compliant

  • Driving measurable reductions in Lost Time Incidents, RIDDOR events, accidents and fire risks

  • Supporting Directors and managers with safety tours, investigations, audits and risk reviews

  • Ensuring incidents are properly reported, investigated and lessons learned are shared

  • Promoting wellbeing through a proactive “Good Day at Work” approach

  • Representing Sodexo in regulatory and external forums

You’ll also work closely with the wider Sodexo Justice Safety & Risk and SHEQ teams, contributing to continuous improvement across the UK Justice portfolio.

What success looks like
  • Strong audit performance and swift closure of actions

  • Fully compliant fire strategy and risk management systems

  • Clear, visible leadership engagement in safety

  • Managers confident and competent in managing risk

  • Accurate reporting, strong governance and improved safety performance trends

About you

You’re technically strong but commercially aware. You’re comfortable operating in a regulated, high-profile environment and can influence at senior level without losing operational credibility.

Essential:

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (or equivalent)

  • Strong leadership and influencing skills

  • Solid experience in fire, health & safety management systems and incident investigation

  • Ability to work autonomously and make sound judgements in complex environments

  • Strong planning, organisation and reporting capability

  • Willingness to travel across sites where required

  • Ability to obtain security clearance

Desirable:

  • Chartered membership (IOSH / IIRSM)

  • Fire Safety qualifications (NEBOSH Fire, PAS 79, BS 9997)

  • ISO audit training

  • Experience in custodial, justice or similarly regulated environments
