This is an exciting new role in a new team, working to change how data is seen in transport, and bringing out the best value for the public. As data becomes more and more critical for transport (as seen in our emerging data roadmaps, industrial strategy, and DfT’s Data Action Plan) and will enable technology (including AI), we need to put in place the firm foundations to allow innovation, efficiency and growth within the department.

Your responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:

  • Continuously improving our governance processes for data, establishing what is needed and how we need to adapt to meet that need
  • Identifying ways to minimise administrative burdens, by taking a joined-up approach with existing governance structures and other teams
  • Understanding best practice and requirements on data, identifying how the department needs to improve in these areas
  • Creating any additional materials or guidance needed for DfT colleagues to understand their responsibilities in data governance
  • Maintaining a network of people in the department with an interest in data, including Data Protection, Legal, Commercial, and those working on AI, analysis and science and technology
  • Advising teams across the department on how they should be considering data within their projects, and sign posting them to tools they need to achieve this
  • Creating ways for people to have sight of wider data work outside of their own area, including on data that exists that they can use
  • Supporting the team on monitoring of the DfT Data Action Plan and wider engagement across the transport sector
  • Supporting the team change the culture around data within DfT, to see data as a valuable asset that we need to invest in, and make best use of
