Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
We are increasing the staffing capacity of our Reproductive Health Research Team and are looking for a midwife or senior nurse/ allied health professional with extensive experience in a maternity setting to join us.
You will join a team of midwives and clinical trials assistants to deliver a diverse and exciting portfolio of research trials, leading the way to better health outcomes for our participants.
Within our research portfolio we have several high-profile studies including the Generation study (newborn genome screening to allow earlier access to treatments), maternal vaccine studies for RSV and GBS, and endometriosis surgical and medical therapy trials to improve the quality of life for affected women.
University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.
Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.
We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalizing your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.
At UHSwe’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.
At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognizing that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.
Working as part of the Reproductive Health Research Team, you will provide specialist research and clinical care to our research participants.
You will take part in all aspects of the research delivery process, from screening potential participants, approaching and discussing their involvement, consenting, completing trial assessments and investigations, delivering interventions, and following up for data collection and safety; all the while you will be ensuring our participants’ safety, rights, and wellbeing are placed at the very centre of our research.
To provide the very best care to our participants, you will integrate research into the clinical service and foster close working relationships with the multidisciplinary team.
Your clinical skills and experience in maternity will be utilised to provide high-quality care throughout the participants’ research journey, including (as applicable to your professional role) antenatal assessment, venesection, vaccination and medication administration, and ECGs.
What experience/ skills are needed?
The successful candidate will have extensive clinical experience in a maternity or women’s health setting at a senior band 5 or band 6 level. Research experience is desirable but not essential as you will be given full training by our Research Midwives and senior leaders, with oversight from our research education team. A keen interest in research and progressing health outcomes for our patient population is essential. Leadership and/ or project management experience will be of particular importance as we work on many research studies at a time, requiring IT skills and a keen attention to detail.
We do cover a 24/7 service, though unsociable working hours are down to individual study need and therefore infrequent, and with sufficient notice. Our core working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:00 – 16:00.
Attached you will find the person specification document which provides more detail about the essential and desirable skills and experience needed for this role. We highly recommend you review this document and use it when completing your application as these criteria are used by hiring managers as guidance during shortlisting.
