Summary


The post is based at Homerton University Hospital in Hackney. Teaching of postgraduates and medical students is considered a high priority.

The post is offered on a full-time basis of 8 clinical programmed activities and 2 supporting professional activities, although applications are welcomed from those wishing to work less than full time.

Specialist interests in Medical Leadership and critical care outreach would be of interest to the Trust and would be strongly encouraged. An additional NHS responsibility PA allowance may also be available for clinical leadership, following appointment and subject to mutual agreement. Interested candidates should discuss this aspect with the AMD.

The post is open to applicants on the specialist register for intensive care medicine (or within six months of entry via an approved training scheme). Dual specialty candidates are very welcome to apply and there would be flexibility to accommodate sessions within an allied specialty.

Purpose of the job

a) To provide a leadership role, in conjunction with other senior members of the Department of Intensive Care, in sustaining and developing clinical services for the residents of Hackney.

b) To maintain and develop an environment of clinical and academic excellence within the Department.

c) To provide input into the critical care outreach service

Clinical responsibilities

a) The care of critically ill patients in accordance with the proposed weekly activities. This may include co-ordination of care for patients, including children, presenting to Homerton Hospital who need transfer to other institutions for continuing care.

b) The training and supervision of junior doctors in the provision of intensive care.

c) Contribution to an allied specialty if relevant and by mutual agreement

The successful applicant will be part of a team comprising of 8 Intensive Care Consultants, with on-call commitments for Intensive Care and not Anaesthesia (there is a separate on call service for these two specialties).There will be 10 programmed activities (PAs), of which 8 will be Direct Clinical Care (this is negotiable for those wishing to be considered for LTFT employment or who may be willing to take on other responsibilities (particularly medical Leadership) within the department).

On-call commitment will be solely at the Homerton University Hospital NHS Trust, on a 1 in 8 basis with prospective cover.

The successful applicant will also be expected to play an active part in the professional supervision, training and management of trainee medical staff.
