Summary


We are looking for a Paediatric Haematology Healthcare Assistant to provide support to our nursing staff so that we can continue to care children and young people with sickle cell, thalassemia and non-malignant hematological condition and their families.

If successful, you would work alongside our friendly nursing team within day care and during attendance to Children’s Emergency Department (CED), Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU) and the inpatient wards.

· Provide recreational and conversational support for patients and is aware of the general need for good communication.

· Assist in the reception of new patients and visitors to the day unit. Offer and prepare light refreshments where appropriate. Show patients/visitors around the ward when required. Assist the registered nurse with the support of distressed visitors or relatives.

· The post holder is expected to take responsibility for self-development on a continuous basis, undertaking on-the-job and other training as required.

· Act as role model to other Nursing Assistants, Student Nurses and other staff as appropriate.

· The post holder is required to familiarise him/herself with and comply with the Trust’s policies and procedures.
• Assist with the obtaining, maintenance, cleaning and storage of equipment

· Maintain upkeep of the patient’s bed area, ensuring that the patient’s space is respected. Replace oxygen and suction as required.

· Take blood or other samples/swabs to the laboratory.
• Respect the customs, values and spiritual beliefs of others and assist them in fulfilling these needs.
• Accurately measure and record observations of temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygen saturation levels, height and weight.
• Test the urine of designated patients. Report and record abnormalities to a trained nurse

• Participate in admission of patients as appropriate and prepare patients for discharge
• Provide comfort and distraction including play and entertainment to children and young people.
• Assist in routine clerical duties of day unit team, such as receiving calls/messages – and relaying these in a timely and appropriate manner – retrieving/filing patient’s notes and X-rays, collection of mail and use of the Electronic Patient’s Record (EPR) or Care Record Service(CRS).
• Maintain upkeep of the patient’s bed area, ensuring that the patient’s space is respected. Replace oxygen and suction as required.

Receive and check deliveries to the unit. Report on stock levels and requisites to appropriate staff, companies and managers.


Unpack stock and maintain stock levels.
