Summary

The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) delivers world-class research, learning and teaching that transforms the knowledge, action and leadership needed for more equitable and sustainable development globally.

We are now seeking an HR Apprentice to join our HR Team. This Level 5 People Professional apprenticeship offers a structured blend of practical, on‑the‑job experience and formal learning. Working alongside experienced colleagues, the apprentice will develop confidence and competence in the knowledge, skills and behaviours of a Level 5 People Professional, through day‑to‑day tasks, protected learning time, and regular development meetings with an IDS workplace mentor.

With full training and support, the HR Apprentice will learn to contribute to HR operations across onboarding, compliance checks, recruitment support, HR systems, casual worker administration, HR governance, and support the HR team with day to day administration to deliver effective HR services to IDS employees. They will also work towards a nationally recognised qualification, supported by Chichester College Group, the largest further‑education provider in West Sussex and Brighton & Hove, and rated Outstanding by Ofsted for its apprenticeship provision in 2025.

Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in HR, a willingness to learn, and a proactive approach to contributing to the team. They will bring strong written and verbal communication skills, excellent organisational ability, and a high level of attention to detail.

IDS supports hybrid working; however, for the first few months, the postholder will be expected to attend the office on all non‑study days to support learning during the initial induction period.
