About us

Salford City Council’s Vehicle Management Services provides maintenance to the councils fleet of vehicles, This includes 26 ton refuse vehicles, road sweepers , vans and trailers. In order to deliver this essential services, we have a dedicated team who provide this support for all our front line vehicles. We also inspect all Salford's registered private hire and hackney taxis on a twice a year basis.

We currently have one exciting vacancy within our Vehicle Management Services team to enable us to continue to build on our success and also bring new experience, knowledge and ideas into the team.

About the Role

Based at Turnpike Depot, Eccles, you will be an enthusiastic and talented Vehicle Mechanic with the drive to keep our Transport Fleet on the move, and be willing to work alternating shifts. This is an opportunity to enhance your skills, carrying out maintenance to our fleet of HGV, Light Vehicles and Specialised Equipment.

You must hold a current driving licence (LGV category C is desirable but not essential) and be trained to NVQ level 3 and/or City & Guilds (or equivalent) for light or heavy vehicles in a Vehicle Maintenance/Repair environment.

You will work as part of a team to support Vehicle Management Services based in Turnpike Depot. The position attracts the opportunity to undertake continual training to enhance skills and knowledge. You need to be organised, and have good written and oral communication skills, and hold good customer care skills. As well as the salary, you will receive enhanced rates for working shifts, tool allowance and HGV driving licence allowance (if applicable).

Your responsibilities will include but not limited to:

  • You will maintain and service all types of vehicles, particularly as contained in the City Council’s fleet of vehicles, including inspections to DVSA standards.
  • You will be required to carry out repairs and maintenance up to major overall standard on a wide range of vehicles and associated plant equipment, including municipal specialist equipment (e.g. bin lifts, refuse compacting equipment, road sweepers, tail lifts).
  • You will operate all associated garage equipment as agreed from time-to-time e.g. vehicle diagnostic reading facility, brake testing equipment, exhaust gas analysing equipment, diesel smoke testing equipment and all other equipment that may be introduced in order to enhance the service provided.
  • You will be required to maintain and complete daily documents including job tickets, inspection sheets, test reports (e.g. brake test and exhaust emissions) and daily timesheets

You will hold a current MOT class 4 qualification or be willing to work towards one
