Summary
The post holder works under the indirect supervision of the Registered Nurse. They will work within the boundaries of their existing and developing skills at all times. The post holder is expected to maintain high standards of care, managing their time, tasks and resources effectively. The key areas within that the healthcare assistant will be expected to support include the colposcopy and hysteroscopy service which are vital tertiary clinics within the department.

· Assist the patient to dress if appropriate.
· Report physical and psychological changes in patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse, ensuring pain and distress are acted on promptly.
· Accurately record information as prescribed on the patients’ care plan if required.
· To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues and escalate any concerns to the nurse in charge.
· To ensure the effective running of the outpatient department assisting with any needs of clinics, medical staff and nurse specialists.
· To be trained in the Colposcopy clinic chaperoning, assisting in clinic, ensuring adequate stock is available and to ensure the service runs effectively by supporting the relevant practitioners
· To be trained in the Hysteroscopy clinic chaperoning, assisting in clinic, ensuring adequate stock is available and to ensure the service runs effectively by supporting the relevant practitioners.

· Under indirect supervision take and record the patient’s observations as required and record on patient record inform the clinician if results are not within the normal parameters.
· Report physical and psychological changes in patient’s condition to the Registered Nurse, ensuring pain and distress are acted on promptly.
· Accurately record information as prescribed on the patients’ care plan if required.
· To promote and safeguard the wellbeing of patients, their families and colleagues and escalate any concerns to the nurse in charge.

· To assist the Registered Nurse caring for patients who are undergoing a trial without a catheter and attend to any needs specific to the patient.
· To assist with the Termination of Pregnancy service and provide any duties that pertains to the patient group
Housekeeping and Environmental Care
· Ensure the environment is clean, comfortable, safe, and welcoming to patients, relatives and all health care professionals.
· Supervise and share responsibility for the care and maintenance of all equipment in the clinic and stock control.
· Keep all storage areas clean, tidy and in good order
· Report any faulty or broken equipment to the Senior Sister, label appropriately and send to relevant department.
· Deliver specimens, test requests, notes or any charts as requested.
· Escort patients to other departments as and when requested to do so.
· Promote and ensure safe handling of valuables and patients property as per Trust policy.
· Ensuring that all clinical areas are adequately stocked and any required stock are in date.
Infection Control
· Demonstrate knowledge of infection control techniques.
· Demonstrate knowledge of safe disposal of sharps into appropriate container.
· Understand universal safety techniques with regard to spillages.
· Dispose of body fluids, soiled linen, clothing etc in line with the Trust Infection Control Policy and Waste Disposal Regulations.
Clerical and Reception
· Undertake delegated clerical duties in the absence of clinic Clerk.
· Demonstrate good effective communication skills.
· Liaise and co-operate effectively with the administrative and clerical staff, nursing
and medical staff, and enquiring visitors to the department.
· Deal with all enquiries politely and effectively in all circumstances and escalate to the nurse in charge if the patient remains unhappy.
· Ensure patients confidentiality and details are maintained at all times.
· Redirect all patients’ enquiries that are outside your field of practice to the Registered
Nurse.
· Accurately file all patient documentation as directed.
· To answer telephone calls and redirect enquiries in the absence of the clinic
Clerk or registered nurse
· Welcome all visitors to the clinic and identify who they are.
Education and Development
· Undertake and complete departmental induction and orientation.
· Complete associated competency document.
· Continue professional development within the NVQ Framework.
· To be aware of and take appropriate action in regard to cardiac arrest, fire and major incident
· To attend all mandatory training in practice and health & safety issues.
· To actively participate in team meetings and team brief cascade of information.
· To support Band 2/3 HCAs within their area, as required.
Quality Improvement / Clinical Governance
· Assist or participate in departmental and Trust initiatives or audits, related to
Quality Improvement / Clinical Governance.
· To support the orientation and educational programs for new staff.
· The post holder is encouraged by the department to attend both personal and
professional development activities that assist in their role and service development
through negotiation with the department’s Senior Sister.
