A warm and welcoming family of four is seeking a kind, patient and enthusiastic Personal Assistant to provide respite support for their 11-year-old son. He has a genetic condition that causes learning disabilities and is a cheerful, affectionate boy with lovely manners and a great sense of humour. He enjoys one-to-one time with an assistant and builds strong relationships with people who are friendly, calm and kind.
He has limited speech, which is improving steadily, and although he may not always use words, he understands a great deal and communicates his needs well. He loves trains, soft play, zip wires and playing with race cars, and enjoys being outdoors, though he can be a little unsteady on his feet. With the right support, he thrives on shared experiences and gentle encouragement.
The role involves providing one-to-one support at home and in the community. This includes helping him get ready for outings, supporting him in and out of the car, and accompanying him on activities such as trips to the zoo, cinema or theatre, swimming, park visits, walks, and opportunities to see trains or wildlife. When he becomes tired, support will continue at home to ensure he feels safe and settled.
The PA will also help with snacks and meals, support with toileting and dressing where needed, and ensure his safety at all times, particularly on stairs, uneven ground and near roads. Occasional support at special events such as birthday parties may also be required. Clear communication with the parents about all aspects of his care and activities is an important part of the role.
This is a rewarding opportunity for someone who enjoys building meaningful relationships and supporting a child to feel happy, secure and confident in his everyday life.
Duties include:
- Helping him to get ready for outings i.e. get his shoes and coat on, support him to get into and out of the car; put on a seatbelt
- Taking him on outings and supporting him to do activities outside the home e.g. - trips to the zoo, cinema, theatre, to see trains, to see ducks/wildlife, swimming, to kick a ball in the park, use park play areas and zip wires, go for walks, play dates with friends etc.
- Providing him with drinks, food & snacks (he chooses a limited diet which we are trying to expand)
- Looking after him at home when he gets too tired to stay out
- Keeping him safe i.e. supported on uneven ground or stairs where he can struggle; ensuring he doesn’t run into traffic etc.
- Wiping him after toileting and helping him pull his clothes up comfortably
- Helping, where necessary, with special occasions such as birthday parties
Candidate qualities:
- Respectful of the employer's privacy and confidentiality
- Reliable with good timekeeping
- Able to both follow instructions and work on own initiative
- Hygienic, tidy and well organised
- Fit and healthy to undertake the required duties
- Patient and possess excellent interpersonal skills
- Honest and cheerful
- Creative
- Able to always work to high standards of health & safety
- SEN experience would be desirable but is not essential
- Be kind, caring, and calm in nature
- Previous caring experience, personal or professional, highly desirable
- Be able to communicate with the parents on all aspects of the son’s care and activities
