Role: Tutor and Mentor (1:1)
The Council is seeking an experienced Tutor and Mentor to support a 16‑year‑old learner with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) and a formal diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Support will take place in person within the Basingstoke district.
The pupil has significant difficulties with:
- Understanding vocabulary and longer or more complex sentences
- Auditory memory and processing verbal information
- Using spoken language for prediction, reasoning, inference and structured explanations
- Developing coherent narratives and expressing ideas
- Social communication, including developing/maintaining relationships
- Identifying, communicating and regulating emotions
A Speech & Language Therapy assessment (July 2023) confirms the diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder, a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects a young person's ability to understand and use spoken language. The SALT recommendations should be used alongside the EHCP to inform strategies and approaches.
- Deliver tailored 1:1 tutoring across key learning areas, adapted to the student's language profile
- Provide mentoring focused on emotional literacy, communication skills and building confidence
- Use visual supports, simplified language and structured teaching strategies
- Break down tasks to support understanding and processing
- Foster engagement, positive routines and rapport
- Promote social communication skills and emotional regulation
- Work collaboratively with the Council and follow EHCP and SALT guidance
- Experience supporting young people with SLCN / DLD
- Strong understanding of language‑friendly strategies and communication scaffolding
- Ability to build trust and work patiently with a student who may struggle to cooperate
- Consistent, reliable and able to work independently
- Enhanced DBS on the update service (or willingness to obtain one)
