The Team and About the role
The posts is an exciting career graded post within the Development Management Planning Team and we are searching for a Planning Technical Support Officer.
The post is Career Graded (from Grade 4 to 8) experience depending, and this team is mainly responsible for the receipt, validation and issuing decisions relating to planning applications. The team also provides key support to the Planning Officers, Enforcement Officers and the Head of Service in carrying out their duties to deliver the objectives of its adopted Development Plan and LETs Strategy. In considering planning applications, we look to ensure that development does the best that it can for the Borough's economic, environmental and social development by providing opportunities to make Bury a great place to live, learn, enterprise and grow.
The team is an extremely busy one and the Service is a Nationally and Regionally recognised as an award winning Team by the Royal Town Planning Institute.
Normal hours of work are 37 hours per week based around the usual business working week. Dependent on service requirements, you may be required to work on a rota basis.
In detail, the Development Management Team is responsible for considering and dealing with planning applications, Planning Enforcement, Conservation matters and Listed Buildings and protected Tree works. The team works at pace and under pressure and maintains a high degree of professionalism.
The job will involve registering new applications, investigating site histories, preparing evidence for case officers, produce one-off plans and documents for case assessment, produce statistical reports relating to cases, maintain case files and carry out other duties to support the team in processing planning applications, appeals and working with customers and professionals.
This role would be interesting to people looking to start a career in planning and keen on career progression in town planning or anyone having graduated. Starting at an introductory level, there are ample opportunities to progress through different levels of graded work streams to be an experienced Technical support Officer supporting the planning service.
We use Microsoft IT packages, a specific back office system and GIS systems.
You will be required to keep abreast of changes in relevant legislation, policy and procedure relating to this area of planning work. You will also support planning officers by receiving, inputting information on the planning databases, where it becomes web published and generating communications to the public, Councillors and businesses. Being able to read and understand plans would be an advantage and having interest in the development process.
Accuracy, dedication and team work are vital qualities that we look for and this has been the key to our success over the years.
If you feel that you communicate well with people, can concentrate for prolonged periods of time, fit well into a team base but can take ownership of your own work with pressured deadlines, these posts would be ideal.
