Summary
The Environment Agency are fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don't just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
Based at the EA depot in Leigh, as a member of the confined spaces team you will be part of a small team that is responsible for inspecting and clearing a range of assets such as, culverts and debris screens in order to assess their structural integrity and ensure their reliability in a flooding event. You will also support the field operations teams across Greater Manchester, Merseyside and Cheshire with maintenance of a range of EA assets.
Due to the nature of confined space entry, you will be required to wear full PPE including dry suits and breathing apparatus. To carry out these duties safely, candidates must be able to meet the physical requirements of the job, such as moving safely within restricted spaces and using the necessary equipment.
You will also be expected to support the incident response rota, which involves being available for out-of-hours response to flooding and environmental incidents on a 24/7 basis. This is usually one week in four.
The team
You’ll join our Confined Spaces Team. We lead on inspecting confined space assets.
Experience/skills required
Experience or an awareness of confined space work would be advantageous but is not necessary because full training will be provided.
Full UK Driving Licence Required. You'll be required to drive in an Environment Agency provided vehicle as part of this role and the majority of the work is carried out in the field. Applicants will need to be comfortable and confident driving a long‑wheelbase Transit or similar vehicle.
This role operates on a fixed 9‑day fortnight working pattern:
Week 1: Monday – Thursday 07:45 – 16:45, Friday 07:45 – 15:15
Week 2: Monday – Thursday 07:45 - 16:45
Due to the nature of the work and operational requirements, working hours are not flexible. Candidates should be able to commit to this set schedule.
You’ll have a range of development opportunities and appropriate training will be provided.
