Summary
Electrical Design Engineer
£50,000–£65,000
Fareham
Permanent
An international engineering group is looking for an experienced Electrical Design Engineer to join its Technical Services team in Fareham. You’ll design and deliver electrical systems for complex, high-reliability projects in sectors such as defence, transport, energy and critical infrastructure, working at the heart of systems that defend the nation, support healthcare and keep vital services running. You will take ownership of electrical design across design‑to‑order projects, from concept through to production, acting as a subject matter expert for electrical and electronic systems. You’ll work closely with electro‑mechanical, software and systems engineers to turn customer requirements into fully realised solutions, and will be a key contributor in internal and customer design reviews.
What you’ll be doing
- Design and develop AC (up to 415 V) and DC (up to 36 V) electrical systems for complex projects.
- Produce system schematics, circuit diagrams and cable/harness designs using tools such as SolidWorks Electrical or similar.
- Calculate voltage drops, cable deratings, supply sizes and protection systems for reliable operation.
- Own component selection and BOM creation, considering obsolescence, availability and cost.
- Ensure designs meet relevant safety and regulatory standards (e.g. UKCA/CE/FCC, BS EN IEC 62368‑1, Def‑Stan where applicable).
- Support DFM/DFT by generating cable assembly drawings, wiring lists and manufacturing documentation.
- Lead or contribute to FMEA/MTBF analysis, risk identification and mitigation for electrical designs.
- Work with purchasing and suppliers on specifications, quotes and part selection; support prototype build and design verification testing.
- Present designs in internal and customer design reviews, acting as design authority on assigned projects.
- Provide ongoing engineering support to production and field teams, including rework guidance and troubleshooting.
What we’re looking for
Essential:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering (or closely related).
- Proven experience designing AC (up to 415 V) and low‑voltage DC (up to 36 V) systems, including power distribution and sequencing.
- Strong CAD skills with electrical design tools
- Experience designing to one or more industry standards (e.g. BS EN IEC 62368‑1, 61010, defence/military specs).
- Ability to translate statements of work and customer requirements into robust designs and documentation.
- Track record of designing complex cable harnesses and producing manufacturing drawings.
- Right to work in the UK without Visa Sponsorship
Desirable:
- Knowledge of PCBA design and electronics principles.
- Experience with audio/video, information and communication equipment.
- Good working knowledge of IPC‑WHMA‑A‑620 for cable and wire harness assemblies.
- Chartered Engineer status or working towards professional registration.
If you’re an experienced Electrical Design Engineer who enjoys variety, technical ownership and working on mission‑critical systems, we’d love to hear from you. Please apply with your CV and a brief overview of your relevant experience. Contact max@holtengineering.co.uk
