Summary


The department of Renal Technical Services predominantly supports the large GSTT dialysis service with hospital and satellite services covering South East London, West Kent and the Channel Islands. The Renal Unit provides dialysis support for a large number of patients across the region, with the technical team ensuring that equipment is in working order, ensuring the clinical service is safely delivered and that operational issues can be addressed as quickly as possible. The team also provides responsible oversight to the Urology decontamination service ensuring that the processes employed adhere to national and Trust standards and guidance. The team also work closely with the Urology department to ensure medical equipment is adequately maintained and managed effectively.

The Deputy Technical Manager will have a responsibility to effectively manage the day-to-day provision of technical support provided on the Guy’s site and to oversee and provide back-up technical support as required to all other areas. They will assist the Technical Manager with in the management of the department management and deputise for them in their absence.

The Deputy Technical Manager will have to be able to repair, maintain and service all dialysis equipment used within the directorate, to the manufacturers’ standards and will be expected to provide advice, expertise and support to the adult renal unit, the renal satellite units, the paediatric renal unit or to home patients on all technical matters, including training, purchasing, and technological developments. They will also assist with the management and audit of Urology decontamination equipment providing support to the Technical Manager and Decontamination Lead.

The Deputy Technical Manager will be expected to participate in the technical “On-Call” service by assisting with the provision of the back-up “On Call” support service and to ensure that the “ON Call” service is maintained appropriately.

We are a small team supporting a busy renal department working for a leading London NHS Hospital Trust. The department currently supports 7 renal satellite units, including a unit on Guernsey, we have an active and expanding home haemodialysis patient population across the South East. We currently look after 200+ haemodialysis machines which support over 800 patients receiving haemodialysis treatment.

4.1 Technical Responsibilities:
• To have a responsibility to effectively manage the day-to-day provision of technical support provided on the Guy’s site, working with the team of technologists, leading by example and ensuring the workload is effectively prioritised and completed, also
ensuring that technical support is appropriately provided to all the other technical areas.
• To work with and assist the Technical Manager with departmental management and be able to deputise for him in his absence at various multi-discipline meetings. This will demand a variety of skills including leadership, partnership working, team working,
resource management and general management skills.
• To be involved with the development of the technical department policies and also their implementation.
• To be able to repair, maintain and service all dialysis equipment used within the Renal Directorate to the manufacturers’ standards and be able to lead and support the other technologists with all technical problem solving.
• To undertake regular audit and spot checks of Urology decontamination processes in line with national and Trust guidelines
• To ensure that all Urology decontamination equipment is working as expected, undertaking water testing to ensure a sterile service is being provided
• To be expected to provide advice, expertise and support to the adult renal unit, the renal satellite units, the Paediatric renal unit or to home patients on all technical matters.
• To be expected to participate in the technical “On-Call” service and ensure the service is maintained and operated appropriately.
• To carry-out installations, repairs, servicing, calibrations and removals on a full range of Haemodialysis and Peritoneal Dialysis machines and associated medical equipment, in line with the manufacturers’ recommendations and guidelines within the
Adult and Paediatric Renal Service.
• To ensure that all dialysis, water and medical equipment is repaired promptly and serviced regularly in line with the manufacturers recommendations and their specifications, and with regard to all health and safety requirements.
• To maintain systems for identifying new equipment entering service and equipment no longer suitable for service, ensuring that safety checks, acceptance tests and documentation are completed for all new equipment before use, and that old equipment is identified and safely removed from use.
• To maintain and or assist with the development of procedures for maintenance, servicing and testing of dialysis equipment, ensuring compliance with current standards, legislation, guidelines and Renal Unit & Trust policies.
• To ensure adherence to the Planned Preventative Maintenance programme for all equipment.
• To assist in the development of a technical quality assurance (QA) programme, incorporating full policy and procedure documentation.
• To ensure that adequate and appropriate supplies of spare parts are ordered and appropriate stock levels maintained.
• To work with the Medical Equipment and Decontamination Lead with the maintenance of the medical equipment inventory, which involves monitoring, managing and advising on the purchase, training, use, repair, service, replacement and disposal of equipment used within the TR&U directorate, whilst ensuring accurate records are
maintained and regularly updated accordingly.
• To ensure that all machines are of the same quality standard and are monitored and developed with common software programmes, that upgrades are performed on all.
