Summary
We are seeking an experienced Sliding Head Programmer/Setter to join a precision engineering team. The successful candidate will be responsible for programming, setting and operating sliding head and fixed-head CNC turning centres to produce complex precision components to tight tolerances on medium to high volume batch work.
Key responsibilities:
- Program, set and operate sliding head lathes and CNC turning centres (FANUC control) to produce high-quality precision components.
- Operate Star sliding head lathes and other multi-axis turning equipment.
- Work confidently on medium to high volume batch production, meeting output and quality targets.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications, apply appropriate tooling and machining strategies.
- Perform first-off checks, in-process inspection and final quality checks using appropriate measuring equipment.
- Optimise cycle times and tooling to improve productivity and reduce scrap.
- Maintain accurate records of setups, programs and production data.
- Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve production or design issues.
Essential skills and experience:
- Proven experience in CNC turning of complex, precision engineered components.
- Hands-on experience operating Star sliding head lathes.
- Fully skilled to program, set and operate CNC turning centres with FANUC control.
- Confident and experienced working on medium to high volume batch work.
- Good understanding of engineering drawings, tolerances and metrology.
- Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills and a continuous improvement mindset.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a production team.
Desirable:
- Experience with tooling selection, offsets and g-code optimisation.
- Experience using CAD/CAM software and familiarity with shop-floor inspection equipment.
