The role:

You will join our established engineering team in Edinburgh whilst working with multidisciplinary teams including coastal modellers, reservoir engineers, geotechnical engineers, ecologists and geomorphologists. You will lead these teams to deliver flood risk management schemes, nature-based solutions, river restoration, natural flood management projects, renewable energy schemes and improvements and repairs to reservoirs.

This varied and exciting role will involve delivery leadership, governance and technical input on a variety of appraisal, design and construction projects. You will work in a fast-paced environment, with a range of public, private and third sector clients including SEPA, the Environment Agency, Network Rail, highways authorities, water companies, lead local flood authorities, rivers and wildlife trusts.
You are ideally chartered or looking to progress through the final stages of Initial Professional Development stages. We provide a considerable JBA training budget and internal course provision, along supported IPD schemes. We are an approved employer for the ICE Training Scheme and have several staff who act as Professional Reviewers who can support you on your development journey.

We are looking for well organised, motivated, enthusiastic, flexible individuals who can lead an engineering team and manage a multi-disciplinary team on the delivery of projects. You are now looking for the next challenge and have a strong desire to grow our engineering capabilities, lead exciting projects and develop junior staff in your team.

The right candidate:

• A bachelor’s degree (or equivalent) in Civil Engineering or similar subject.
• Organised and able to manage the workload of others.
• Commercially minded, with capabilities in the financial and contractual management of projects. Pragmatic thinker and solution finder.
• Able to mentor and develop junior staff including with their Initial Professional Development.
• Effective communicator, both internally and with clients and other external stakeholders.
• A full UK driving licence is required for this role.

Essential attributes for the role

• Technical leadership of the design process to develop sustainable and resilient solutions that meet client needs.
• Championing technical innovation to improve efficiency and quality of delivery, ensuring uptake of latest developments in digital design tools.
• Developing and mentoring junior members of staff.
• Building positive relationships with clients, colleagues and key stakeholders.
• End to end project management, including contracts, budgetary control, programmes, change and risk management.
• Development and coordination of multi-disciplinary teams and subcontractors.
• Leading Safety in Design (CDM) and compliance with environmental legislation.
• Experienced in design relating to earthworks, drainage design, retaining walls and headwalls.
• A willingness to undertake site visits in various areas of the UK, including overnight stays.

Desirable attributes for the role:

• Chartered through a relevant body (e.g. ICE) or close to professional review stage.
• Scour assessments for highways and rail structures.
• Natural flood management and sustainable urban drainage systems.
• Practical use of coding/parametric modelling including Python and Dynamo.
• Experienced in the use of the NEC4 suite of contracts.
• Hydraulic modelling and Flood Risk Assessment.

Location:

The role is located at our Edinburgh, EH14 4AP office within the Heriot Watt Research Park, home to Edinburgh’s largest science park.
