Job overview:

An opportunity has arisen within the division of surgery at North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH), Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust (MFT) for two consultant general surgeons with sub-specialty interest in colorectal surgery. The successful candidate will be a core member of the elective and acute general surgery service. Successful candidate will be based at NMGH and he/she will take part in the oncall emergency rota at North Manchester.

The post carries 10 PA’s including 1 core SPA,plus extra PAs based on mutual agreement and service needs

· Administration

· Teaching

· Continuing Medical Education

· Ward round/cover

· Audit/ MDT

We have a close partnership with the University of Manchester. There will be opportunities to engage in academic activities which may be facilitated by our academic leads.





The post holder will have responsibility for the care of their patients and will undertake administrative duties related to their care.

A special interest in CR surgery is required to support the existing benign and future Cancer services at NMGH.

The post holder will be expected to participate in the IBD MDT, colonic polyp MDT and CR MDT.

The post-holder will also be suitably skilled to manage the care of other patients requiring general acute and elective surgical procedures.

CR cancer patients in the North of Manchester are currently managed by the Northern Care Alliance. However, disaggregation of service to MFT is planned by November 2026, therefore, the candidate must be skilled in the surgical management of colorectal cancer and be able to support this service going forward.

The successful candidate will be trained in performing diagnostic endoscopy. JAG accreditation in colonoscopy and achievement of endoscopy trainer status will be advantageous.

In addition to the duties listed, this post will assist with the maintenance of an emergency 1 in 8 on-call rota.

The surgical team plays an important role in the education of medical students and the successful candidate will participate in undergraduate teaching.

There will also be a requirement to participate in postgraduate and multi-disciplinary teaching.

Clinical Audit is a statutory requirement, and the successful candidate will be expected to participate in this process.
