The Urology Service at St Mary’s Hospital, Isle of Wight NHS Trust, has an exciting opportunity to appoint a Urology Consultant. The posts will provide a comprehensive general urology outpatient, inpatient, diagnostic and day case surgery service for urology patients. Those who are skilled in the surgical management of BPH would be particularly welcomed.

This appointment will focus on developing the urology service on the Isle of Wight and support our joint strategy across the Partnership. Although the successful candidate will be employed by the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, in discussion with QAH there are potential opportunities to undertake sub-specialty work at the Queen Alexandra Hospital, in Portsmouth.

The post holder will be expected to demonstrate excellent leadership skills with regard to individual performance, clinical teams, the Trust and when participating in national initiatives.

It is hoped that the post will be attractive to a clinical leader, willing to further the development of the acute partnership arrangements between the Isle of Wight and Portsmouth, bringing robust professional experience and skills.

Established in April 2012, the Isle of Wight NHS Trust provides acute and ambulance services to an isolated offshore population of 140,000. Based at the heart of the Island, with 246 beds and accepting about 30,000 admissions each year, St Mary’s Hospital in Newport is our main base. Services include A&E, the Urgent Treatment Centre (by referral only), Emergency Medicine and Surgery, Elective Surgery, Critical Care, comprehensive Maternity, SCBU and Paediatric Services with approximately 850 births per year.


The Isle of Wight Ambulance Service consists of the operational delivery units for the 999 emergency ambulances, the 999 and NHS 111 call centre, Emergency Planning Resilience and Response and Patient Transport Services (PTS). The services handle almost 30,000 emergency calls and offers over 10,000 NHS 111 calls each year.

Key responsibilities & main duties

Clinical

· To deliver high quality diagnostic, treatment and management of adult patients with urological disorders and diseases in line with clinical protocols. Proactively ensuring that all patients receive rapid assessment, treatment and clinical decision making, whilst ensuring our standard to deliver safe quality and performance are delivered and sustained.

· Ensure prompt attendance at agreed Direct Clinical Care Programmed Activities.

· Ensure patients are involved in decisions about their care and to respond to their views.

· Contribute to the team working within the department and promote a culture of collaborative working with colleagues across the Partnership to optimise patient safety.

· Ensure clinical guidelines and protocols are adhered to by junior medical staff and updated on a regular basis.

· Keep fully informed about best practice in the specialty/sub-specialty areas and ensure implications for practice changes are discussed with the Clinical Director.

· To role model good practice for infection control to all members of the multidisciplinary team.



Performance, continuous improvement & sustainability



· Assist in establishing and maintaining a high-quality environment for patients and staff, which delivers excellent care to patients and supports the achievement of all local and national access targets.

· Work with other clinical managers, senior, Executive and other colleagues across the joint service to agree consistent approaches and put in place agreed systems and processes to establish and monitor required standards of care, as defined by the Trust, Department of Health and Social Care, National Institute of Clinical Excellence, GIRFT and other relevant bodies (e.g. Royal Colleges).

· Promote and achieve cost improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. Where necessary lead challenging but respectful conversations with departments and services where areas of improvement are required.

· Work with medical, nursing and managerial colleagues to ensure high performance in the following areas: of clinical and operational efficiency and outcomes

· Participate in the business planning and objective setting process for the Directorate and Trust where appropriate and team objective setting as part of the annual job planning cycle.



Other



· Ensure that adequate systems and procedures are in place to control and monitor leave for non-Consultant medical staff where required and ensure that there is appropriate cover within the clinical areas, including out of hours arrangements.

· Adhere to Trust / departmental guidelines on leave (ensuring prospective cover) including reporting absence.

· Participate in the recruitment of non-Consultant medical staff as delegated by the Clinical Director.

· Represent the Trust at appropriate clinical networks / other external clinical meetings, as delegated by the Clinical Director.

· Actively demonstrate behaviours in alignment with Trust vision and values and promote these as a role model and encourage others to do the same.

· Demonstrate compliance with Trust policies and procedures, duty of care to patients, Trust and professional codes of conduct (Good Medical Practice).Postholders should ensure that remain medically qualified and they maintain specialist registration with the General Medical Council, maintaining the competencies required to carry out the duties required of the post.

· Fulfil Royal College and CPD requirements. Keep up to date in areas of specialist interest to ensure fitness for practice.
