This role is based within a specialist education or alternative provision setting, supporting pupils with SEMH needs, trauma, attachment difficulties and challenging behaviour.This is an ideal role for candidates with experience in children's social care, youth work, mentoring, behaviour support or alternative provision, who are passionate about helping vulnerable pupils re‑engage with education.Key Responsibilities - Mentor / SEMH Support Role
- Provide 1:1 and small‑group mentoring for pupils with complex social, emotional and behavioural needs
- Support pupils who have been permanently excluded from mainstream education
- Promote positive behaviour, emotional regulation and engagement with learning
- Use trauma‑informed, restorative and de‑escalation strategies
- Act as a consistent, positive role model and trusted adult
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SEN staff and external professionals
Pupil NeedsYou will support pupils who may present with:
- SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) needs
- Trauma and attachment difficulties
- Challenging behaviour
- Additional needs such as ASD, ADHD or learning difficulties
Supporting Reintegration into EducationA core element of this mentoring role is supporting pupils to transition back into a suitable education setting when they are emotionally and developmentally ready.You will:
- Build strong, trusting relationships to help pupils feel safe and supported
- Re‑engage pupils with education through structure, routine and encouragement
- Support the development of confidence, resilience, coping strategies and social skills
- Help pupils prepare for reintegration into alternative provision, specialist education or a phased return to mainstream
- Support reduced timetables and transition plans where appropriate
- Liaise with families, SEN teams and professionals to ensure a joined‑up, child‑centred approach
The aim is to help pupils rebuild confidence in education, experience success again, and move forward into a setting where they can thrive long‑term.About You - Who This Role SuitsThis role is well suited to candidates with experience as a:
- Mentor or Behaviour Mentor
- Support Worker or Residential Support Worker
- Youth Worker
- Teaching Assistant (SEMH / Alternative Provision)
- Children's Social Care or Residential Childcare professional

- Passionate about supporting vulnerable and disengaged young people
- Able to build professional relationships while maintaining clear boundaries
