About the SEN School
A welcoming and inclusive specialist SEN school in Walthamstow is recruiting a dedicated BSL Teaching Assistant to support pupils with a range of additional needs, including:
• Hearing impairments
• Autism (ASC)
• Speech, language, and communication needs
• Complex and additional SEN
You will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team alongside teachers, SENCOs, and therapists, all committed to delivering high-quality, inclusive education.
The Role – BSL Teaching Assistant
As a BSL Teaching Assistant, your responsibilities will include:
• Providing 1:1 and small-group support using British Sign Language (BSL)
• Supporting pupils with hearing impairments across lessons and school activities
• Assisting with communication, engagement, and access to learning
• Supporting emotional regulation, routines, and social interaction
• Adapting learning materials to meet individual SEN needs
• Working closely with teachers, SENCOs, and therapists to deliver EHCP-led support
• Helping to create a calm, inclusive, and supportive learning environment
Person Specification
Essential
• A degree in Psychology, Special Education, or a related field
• British Sign Language qualification – Level 2 minimum (Level 3 preferred)
• Strong communication skills and a patient, empathetic approach
• Genuine interest in SEN, inclusion, and child development
Desirable
• Experience working with children or young people with SEN or SEND
• Experience supporting pupils with hearing impairments
• Interest in long-term careers such as teaching, speech and language therapy, or educational psychology
