We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough.

We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role:

The Development Management service plays a key role in the delivery of growth across Wigan, facilitating delivery of the aspirations and objectives set out in the adopted Local Plan Core Strategy, through providing employment and housing land, protecting the Borough’s built and environmental assets to promote Wigan as a key location for future growth.

This exciting role is at the heart of this agenda. You will be responsible for trees and woodlands planning services, including handling applications for works to trees, Tree Preservation Orders and related matters and providing specialist input to the Development Management officers on trees on development sites.

You will also advise the council on the management of its own tree stock on council land and on the highway, including on risk assessments and preventing the spread of disease.

About you:

You will need to hold a degree or equivalent level of qualification in arboriculture or a closely related professional discipline and be a Professional Member of the Institute of Chartered Forestry or other relevant professional body. You will need a high level of knowledge and understanding of the legal, regulatory, policy, resource and political framework within which arboriculture and trees and woodlands planning processes operate.

You will need to be self-organised with good project management skills, able to work well alone on complex tasks with minimum supervision, and an effective and concise communicator.

About us:

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our 2 place missions; create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

You will be surrounded by a team of dedicated and capable professionals and supported by an inspiring leadership team.

Through our ‘Team Wigan’ behaviours: Be Courageous, Be Accountable, Be Positive and Be Kind, we actively encourage innovation, strive to achieve outstanding services and celebrate our successes through the delivery of the Council’s Progress with Unity: A new era for Wigan Borough, a movement delivering change across the Borough over the next decade. In doing so, we truly value and recognise our staff as our greatest asset, allowing them to grow and fulfil their potential.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits click here to find out more about working for #TeamWigan.
