Summary
Applications are invited for a 6 month fixed term Locum Consultant post in Respiratory and General (internal) Medicine.
This is a whole-time post offering an exciting opportunity for a highly motivated Medic to join a dynamic, rapidly expanding team delivering multidisciplinary acute care in Mersey and West Lancashire Teaching Hospitals.
Applicants are required to hold Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (UK or equivalent qualifications)
Due to the short-term nature of the role / service demand, the successful candidate must hold full registration with the GMC and have existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application. Candidates who are not GMC registered or do not hold existing right to live and work in the UK, at the time of application will not progress through to the shortlisting stage.
An Enhanced DBS with barred lists for both Adults & Children is required for this post.
This full time NHS post will enable the Trust to continue the delivery of Respiratory services across the primary/secondary care interface, support delivery of acute care for respiratory patients and achieve waiting time targets for outpatients and emergency care.
Successful candidates will complement existing lung cancer team and support developing new specialist services in Asthma, ILD and sleep medicine.
Weekday on call commitment. The weekday on call rota (Respiratory only) will be a 1 in 13 providing telephone advice between the hours of 5pm and 9am.
Weekend on call commitments. The weekend rota will be a 1 in 6.5 with structured daily commitments both Saturday and Sunday. It is envisaged that the 2 Respiratory Consultants will be physically present on the respiratory wards from 8am to 2pm providing:
• NIV and new patient review (on the respiratory wards)
• Review of potential discharges
• Review of sick patients
• Board round review of current inpatients
• MAU in reach (if required)
• Phone call advice (including out of hours)
The weekend on-call commitment is calculated at 0.615 PA, but to maintain a 10 PA working week, time off in lieu or a hybrid of time off in lieu and payment can be offered.

Acute Care

Providing adult community services for St Helens and a wheelchair service in Chorley, South Ribble, and West Lancashire. Our inpatient unit at Newton Community Hospital is where patients needing acute hospital beds can continue rehabilitation, freeing up space for more unwell patients. We also provide urgent care at our Urgent Treatment Centre located in St Helens town centre.
Specialist Regional Services
We provide the Mersey Regional Burns & Plastic Surgery Unit at Whiston Hospital and the Spinal Injuries Unit at Southport Hospital to more than 4 million people across the whole of Merseyside, West Lancashire, Cheshire, Isle of Man and North Wales.

• The Consultant appointments to these posts will deliver daily sessions of care to respiratory inpatients on the respiratory wards in conjunction with 1 specialist weekly outpatient clinic and either 1 weekly general chest clinic or in-reach service for a selected acute respiratory admission ward round, as well as bronchoscopy and EBUS services.
• The entire Consultant Respiratory team has moved to this model of care, with separate inpatient/outpatient periods on a rotating basis. This innovation has promoted ambulatory care for patients with respiratory disease, improved the quality of inpatient care, reduced length of stay, and forged more cohesive day to day working relationships between the AMU staff and respiratory teams.
• In the evolving Respiratory department model of care 13 full time Respiratory Consultants are available Monday-Friday to provide inpatient and outpatient care, with all Consultants being available for the weekend commitment.
• The Consultants appointed to these posts will help to supervise and work alongside 2 respiratory ST4+ trainees, 2 specialty doctors and 3 senior clinical fellows. This is complemented by larger team of 10 foundation year trainees, 4 internal medicine trainees (IMT1 & IMT2)/GP trainees, and 5 IMT3 level trainees.
• The medical team is also supported by 4 equivalent full time lung cancer nurses and a lung cancer support worker as well as 4 equivalent full time general respiratory specialist nurses.
