Summary

Job Title: SEND Teaching Assistant (SEMH Focus)

Location: Gorton, Manchester
Hours: Full-time, Monday to Friday, 8:30am - 3:30pm
Key Stage: Year 2
Start: ASAP (or negotiable)

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated and resilient SEND Teaching Assistant to work 1:1 with a vulnerable male pupil in Year 2 with SEMH needs, alongside traits linked to ADHD and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA).

The child does not always access learning in a traditional way. Due to PDA, learning is not always National Curriculum-focused, so flexibility, creativity, and relationship-building are essential. Progress is often achieved through regulation, trust, and engagement rather than formal academic tasks.

An EHCP application is currently going through appeal, and the school has strong systems in place, including behaviour plans, crisis plans, and risk assessments, with consistent support from the KS1 team and SLT.

Key Responsibilities

-Provide 1:1 support tailored to emotional and behavioural needs

-Support regulation, engagement, and positive relationships

-Follow behaviour, crisis, and risk management plans

-Adapt activities creatively to meet the child's needs

-Work closely with the class teacher (ECT), SENCO, and KS1 team

-Maintain a calm, nurturing, and consistent approach

The Ideal Candidate Will:

-Have strong behaviour management skills and an understanding of SEMH

-Be aligned with nurture-based, relational approaches

-Use initiative in the classroom while knowing when to seek support

-Have good awareness of risk and safety

-Enjoy working as part of a supportive team

-Be patient, reflective, and emotionally resilient

Essential & Desirable Criteria

Essential:

Minimum CACHE Level 2 in Childcare (or equivalent)

Desirable:

Experience working with children with SEND, particularly SEMH, ADHD, or PDA
