Summary


We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dedicated Consultant Clinical Scientist (Agenda for change Band 8C)in the Clinical Biochemistry Department at East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust.The Biochemistry department is located on the two main hospital sites, Eastbourne District General Hospital (EDGH) and Conquest Hospital Hastings. You will be based mainly at Conquest but expected to work across site. East Sussex is a magnificent place to live surround by beautiful coastline and countryside. There is a frequent train service from Eastbourne/Hasting to Brighton and London.

The successful candidate will join a friendly team dedicated to providing a first-class patient-centred service including the Department Clinical Director Consultant in Chemical pathology/Metabolic Medicine, two part-time Consultant Chemical pathologists, a Consultant Clinical Scientist and a Principal Clinical Scientist. The department offers all routine clinical biochemistry diagnostic tests including protein electrophoresis. We receive about 3,000 samples per day across both sites. Approximately 48% of the work is generated from the Trust and 52% from the primary care and community.

You will be part of the Clinical and Scientific advisory team and have an ability to provide a comprehensive and high standard patient focused clinical laboratory service. The role includes participation in the Duty Biochemist rota and protein electrophoresis reporting rota.

The post holder will have active role in leading specific service improvement projects including new or existing assay evaluation and updating Clinical audit, new protocol development or updating existing protocols
They will contribute to quality management, and participate in assuring the quality of work of the department meets nationally accepted standards including UKAS ISO 15189 Accreditation.
The role requires the post holder to undertake
the requirements of the role to skilled performance, with a high level of individual responsibility.

TheCandidates must have Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists and HCPC registered as a Clinical Scientist after successfully completion ofthe Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Clinical Biochemistry. The most important characteristics are wide knowledge and experience in the field, teamwork, and ability to lead a progressive and highly patient-focused laboratory service for the service users.A special interest in a particular area of clinical biochemistry would be encouraged. There will be no requirement to participate in the out of hours clinical on call cover.

ESHT CLINICAL BIOCHEMISTRY SERVICE

The Clinical Biochemistry department provides a wide range of diagnostic services for the East Sussex Healthcare NHS Trust and to East Sussex GPs. Services are also provided to the Premier Health private wing of the hospital situated at the Conquest.
The department offers all routine clinical biochemistry diagnostic tests including general chemistry, endocrinology, tumour markers, haematinics, HbA1c, xanthochromia scanning and protein electrophoresis.



The department processes all primary care clinical biochemistry at a combined blood diagnostics laboratory based at EDGH, while work from within the Conquest Hospital is processed on site. Both sites offer 24/7 blood diagnostics and blood transfusion laboratory services. It is part of a Managed Service Contract with modern equipment including:

Accreditation status
The Clinical Biochemistry departments at Conquest and EDGH are integrated. The combined department is fully accredited to UKAS ISO15189, March 2025

CLINICAL SERVICE
The Consultant Chemical Pathologists currently provides outpatient clinics on the EDGH site and Conquest. This is principally a Lipid Clinic, but does include some patients with other metabolic problems (e.g. porphyria, renal stones, cystinuria).

Point of Care Testing (POCT)
POCT services are provided by a POCT team that consists of two POCT coordinators, Registered BMS and four Support assistants and supported by the Consultant Clinical Scientist as a POCT Clinical Lead. The service covers the two main hospitals and the wider community.

Junior Medical Staff
The department has no junior medical staff.

Office Accommodation and Support
The post holder will have a dedicated office on the Conquest site with a personal computer with access to the internet and email, and will share an office and computers in a joint office on the EDGH site.
The post holder will have administrative support.
