Summary

Specialist Technician - Gallery Curator

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The successful candidate will co-ordinate the effective operation of the College Gallery and specialist exhibition spaces within the Faculty of Digital and Creative Industries, and supporting Newcastle College's Mandela School of Art and Design. The role will lead on the planning, installation, and de-installation of exhibitions across both internal and external spaces, ensuring professional presentation standards are met at all times.

They will be responsible for the day-to-day operational running of the Mandela Building, including the maintenance of gallery and studio facilities in line with health and safety requirements. The postholder will provide technical and practical support to learners and staff, supervising students during exhibition activity and demonstrating the safe and effective use of specialist equipment and display systems.

The College Gallery Curator and Specialist Technician will also co-ordinate the preparation, care, and replenishment of exhibition resources and materials, taking a lead on professional gallery practice, installation standards, and industry-specific requirements. They will work closely with curriculum teams to support teaching, assessment, live briefs, and public-facing events, ensuring the gallery functions as a dynamic learning and showcase environment.

The ideal candidate will have experience and knowledge of curatorial practice, exhibition installation, and the technical requirements of gallery and creative spaces, with a strong background in art, design, or a related creative discipline. Experience of working within an arts, cultural, or educational setting is desirable, with industry experience preferred.
