Summary

Content Development Manager (Commissioning and Editorial)

Contract: Permanent, full time
Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday–Friday, 9am–5:30pm (1-hour unpaid lunch)
Work model: Hybrid (3 days in office, 2 days from home)

Purpose of the Role
The Content Development Manager leads content and product development throughout the full lifecycle — from identifying and researching opportunities, through commissioning and production, to launch and ongoing optimisation. This includes managing content creators, quality assurance, production and technology development activities, and driving continuous improvement using meaningful performance metrics.

The role takes a user-focused, best-practice approach to developing high-quality content across multiple formats, including print and digital publications, online platforms, apps and e-learning.

Key Responsibilities

Client

Build and maintain collaborative client relationships, including securing approvals at all stages of development

Present new ideas and opportunities to clients

Attend client and industry events

Champion end-user needs and challenge assumptions

Create, manage and deliver project plans to meet business and client requirements

Contribute to management information, presentations and reports

Finance

Develop business cases for new projects, including financial analysis and forecasting

Set and manage project budgets

Negotiate contracts and fees with authors and content creators, and manage payment records

People

Support and collaborate with the content development team, sharing knowledge and identifying cross-client opportunities

Work closely with account management to ensure high levels of client satisfaction

Coordinate with service delivery teams to ensure production aligns with project plans

Collaborate with project management and technology teams, including UAT activities

Partner with marketing on market research, user experience testing and marketing plans

Support sales teams to identify and optimise sales channels for new products

Build and maintain relationships with authors, SMEs, content creators and industry bodies

Operations

Follow content development processes and ensure strong project governance

Apply content design and instructional design best practice

Deliver projects on time, on budget and to required quality standards

Source and manage authors, contributors and reviewers

Oversee quality assurance, working with user panels and internal and external stakeholders

Provide constructive feedback to content creators

Quality check content for accuracy, style, brand compliance and scope

Select appropriate content formats based on user needs and platform innovation

Develop sector knowledge to identify new content and product opportunities

Monitor product performance (financial and user metrics) and drive continuous improvement

High editorial standards and strong commercial awareness

Ability to develop ideas, respond constructively to feedback, and secure buy-in

Self-motivated and able to work with minimal supervision

Experience and Qualifications

Relevant publishing experience, ideally in a similar role

Proven ability to deliver projects to tight timescales

Experience managing internal and external stakeholders

Strong understanding of content development, content management, multimedia publishing, e-learning and instructional design, with awareness of digital opportunities
