Summary

Perform complex ultrasound examinations, unsupervised and to a very high standard. Provide an efficient and responsive service to patients and users of the service. Act as a source of specialist knowledge and clinical expertise in ultrasound appearances, working autonomously & making clinical decisions, which may have a direct impact upon the patients diagnosis, management & treatment, e.g. combined Downs Syndrome screening. Interpret complex data in order to ascertain and identify any pathological or incidental findings, including those with diverse or complex presentations or pathologies, offering a diagnosis or differential diagnosis, where appropriate. Promote excellent working relations with all staff across the Trust. Evaluate and prioritise examination request forms prior to appointments being made. Use analytical and judgemental skills to provide interpretation of ultrasound images in order to provide an independent written report. Use the Viewpoint software to calculate the Combined Risk associated with the Screening of Downs syndrome. Relay this risk to the lady and her relatives, providing counselling if required and / or refer following departmental guidelines to the screening co-ordinator, Fetal Medicine Consultant or Tertiary Referral Centre as appropriate. Responsible for the organisation and management of own patient workload within the department and maintain accurate associated records. This will involve effective use of the Viewpoint software. Assist when required in complex invasive procedures e.g. amniocentesis, CVS. Assist in the clinical instruction, supervision and assessment of students midwives/doctors/radiographers in conjunction with the training co-ordinators (for the university). Mentor Advanced / senior Radiographers / Midwives / Registrars undertaking academic post graduate qualifications (Extended roles), specifically Ultrasound image interpretation & reporting. Undertake clinical practice, working, on occasions, single handed. Operate accurately and safely complex equipment (in excess of £80,000) which requires a high degree of manual dexterity. When involved in the training and formal assessment of junior post graduate staff and students emphasis on the safe use of this equipment is paramount. Supervise support workers performing duties in the ultrasound department. Ensure effective and efficient use of all resources including consumables. Contribute to financial incentives by careful use of resources and income generation by providing scan images to obstetric patients. Participate in the recruitment process for ultrasound team members, as required.
