Summary

The AI and Data Science Team is a growing, friendly and highly capable team of data scientists. Our vision is to cement DfT as a leading department in the use of AI. We will continue to expand our reach across the DfT, its agencies and delivery bodies and make better use of data science techniques and advances in AI to realise the ambition set out by the Prime Minister in the AI Opportunities Action Plan and in DfT’s Transport AI Action Plan.

Passionate about innovation, we bring new ideas and approaches to the most challenging issues facing transport. We collaborate with data engineers, digital leads, academia, industry, and policy professionals to unlock impact.

Some examples of our work include:

Connectivity Tool: helps built environment professionals and others to understand the connectivity of places in England and Wales. You can use it here.
AI Consultation Analysis Tool (CAT): uses ensembles of large language models with a responsible human-in-the-loop design to analyse consultation responses accurately and rapidly. You can read our evaluation here.
AI Correspondence Drafter (CorD) tool: uses retrieval augmented generation (RAG) to produce accurate first draft responses to enquiries from members of the public.
Computer vision solutions: anomaly detection and classification using bespoke machine learning models to unlock insights to support operational decisions in transport.
Agentic AI solutions: development and evaluation of AI agents to reduce the resource burden associated with navigating complex documents and processes.
