About the Role We are seeking an energetic, resilient, and sporty SEN Learning Support Assistant to join a supportive Alternative Provision setting. This role is ideal for candidates with backgrounds in sport, coaching, fitness, youth work, or outdoor activities who can bring structure, motivation, and positive physical engagement into the school day.

The successful candidate will be fully immersed in school life, acting as a strong, positive role model for students who benefit from routine, movement, and clear boundaries. You will help channel energy in a constructive way, support emotional regulation, and keep learners engaged through active and practical approaches.
You will be supporting pupils with a range of additional needs, including

ASD – Autistic Spectrum Disorder
MLD – Moderate Learning Difficulty
PMLD – Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulty
ADHD – Attention Deficit / Hyperactivity Disorder
Mental Health needs – Anxiety, depression, and emotional regulation difficulties

Key Responsibilities

Supporting pupils on a one-to-one basis and in small groups
Using sport, movement, and physical activities to support engagement and regulation
Confidently delivering and supporting planned learning and practical activities
Promoting positive behaviour, resilience, teamwork, and independence
Acting as a calm, assertive presence during high-energy or challenging situations
Identifying triggers and using de-escalation, calming, and distraction techniques
Working closely with teachers and the wider school team to support individual needs

Essential Requirements

Previous experience working with children or young people (minimum 3 months), particularly those with SEN, behavioural needs, or ADHD
Sporty, active, or physical background (e.g. sports coaching, PE support, youth work, fitness, outdoor education) highly desirable
Ability to remain calm, consistent, and confident in challenging situations
Strong behaviour management skills and clear communication style
Patient, resilient, and compassionate approach
Commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people
Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team

Desirable but not essential:

Qualifications in Youth Work, Health & Social Care, Sports Coaching, or Supporting Teaching and Learning
Team Teach or other behaviour management training
Ability to obtain suitable references and an enhanced DBS check
