Summary

About the role

We’re looking for a permanent ITS Technician to join the Southampton Highways Contract. In this role, you’ll help keep the city moving by supporting the day‑to‑day operation of Intelligent Transport Systems across Southampton. You’ll play an important part in ensuring traffic signals, variable message signs and wider transport technology operate effectively—contributing to a safer, smoother and more reliable network for all road users. If you enjoy problem‑solving, have an interest in IT, and want to develop your technical skills while working closely with an experienced team, this role offers the perfect opportunity.

What you'll be doing

  • Assisting with the daily operation of traffic signal management to ensure ITS assets are maintained and optimised.
  • Identifying faults on the traffic signal network and reporting them to the subcontractor for resolution.
  • Programming and updating Variable Message Signs across the city.
  • Supporting the delivery of transportation projects and ongoing monitoring of the transport network.
  • Installing temporary timelapse cameras and managing data collection.
  • Liaising with customers, subcontractors and utilities to maintain positive working relationships.
  • Demonstrating proficiency in Word, Excel, MS Teams and other MS applications, with familiarity in LINSIG or KeySignals beneficial.
  • Prioritising workload to ensure compliance with contract KPI targets and transport schemes.
  • Communicating effectively with a range of different stakeholders.
  • Working in line with all relevant Health & Safety requirements.
  • Undertaking personal training and development to build skills, knowledge and competence.

Who we're looking for

  • Strong communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and problem solving.
  • HND qualification (desirable).
  • Three A‑levels at grade C or above (desirable).
  • GCSE grades C or above in Maths, English and Science (essential).
  • A positive, can‑do attitude with a willingness to ask questions and develop your knowledge.
