Contract Type: Permanent
We are seeking a reliable and multi-skilled Night Shift Handyperson to join the facilities team, delivering essential maintenance services across the Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust healthcare estate.
The role is primarily based at Highgate Mental Health Centre, near Archway Underground.
Job Description
This role forms part of the night engineering response team, working alongside one other night engineer to provide first-response maintenance support and deliver planned works during out-of-hours periods.
The successful candidate will carry out a wide range of fabric, plumbing, basic mechanical, and general building maintenance tasks, ensuring the hospital environment remains safe, compliant, and fully operational overnight.
While the role is predominantly site-based at Highgate, there may be occasional requirements to attend nearby satellite sites using a pool vehicle, responding to urgent maintenance issues during the shift.
This is an excellent opportunity for a practical, hands-on individual looking to develop their facilities or engineering career within a critical healthcare environment.
Key Responsibilities
Act as first-response maintenance support during night operations.
Carry out planned and reactive maintenance across building fabric and services.
Complete general repairs including doors, locks, fixtures, flooring, ceilings, and fittings.
Undertake basic plumbing tasks such as leak repairs, clearing blockages, and replacing components.
Complete painting and decorating works as required to maintain clinical and non-clinical areas.
Log, update, and close tasks via the site CAFM system.
Proactively identify building defects, hazards, or compliance risks and report accordingly.
Professional and Personal Competencies/Qualifications
Previous experience in a maintenance, handyperson, or technical facilities role.
Competent across general fabric maintenance, basic plumbing, and minor mechanical repairs.
Comfortable working independently during night shifts.
Able to work professionally within a live healthcare setting.
Basic IT skills and confidence using CAFM or job-logging systems.
Trade qualifications (NVQ, City & Guilds, or equivalent) are desirable but not essential.
Full UK driving licence preferred due to occasional satellite-site attendance.
If you are a dependable, multi-skilled maintenance professional who takes pride in delivering high-quality work and wants to play a vital role supporting NHS services overnight, we would welcome your application.
