About the Company
EM Cubed Ltd is a growing independent practice in Lesmahagow, supporting a diverse portfolio of small and medium-sized businesses with bookkeeping, accounts, tax compliance, tax planning and business advisory services.
Although we are a small practice, we offer significant advantages for the right person including study support and a clear partnership path for those looking to become a qualified accountant. We provide meaningful responsibility, varied client exposure, and the opportunity to play a key role in shaping the future of the firm.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Assistant Accountant with a background in accountancy practice work. The role will commence in March/April 2026, with interviews taking place in February. Due to the location of the practice the ability to drive or live within walking distance is required.
As an Assistant Accountant, you will work closely with your peers and the business owner to gain hands-on experience across all aspects of accounting and client management.
Although the role is office based with no opportunity for remote working, there is some flexibility on hours worked to support candidates for whom a full-time role is not suitable.
Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will undertake a wide range of practice-based duties, including:
• Bookkeeping using a range of software including Xero, FreeAgent and Sage.
• Preparing and filing VAT returns.
• Processing and filing confirmation statements.
• Managing payroll and CIS processing, submissions and reporting.
• Assisting with year-end accounts preparation.
• Liaising with HMRC regarding client tax affairs.
• Communicating directly with clients to gather information, resolve queries and provide updates.
• Maintaining accurate digital records and ensuring a robust audit trail.
• Supporting the general running of the practice through some administrative duties.
Requirements
• Proven experience working in an accountancy practice environment.
• A solid understanding of basic bookkeeping principles, debits and credits, in addition to being adaptable to various bookkeeping software.
• Understanding of VAT rules and reporting requirements.
• Experience in payroll and CIS processing.
• Excellent communication skills, high levels of accuracy, organisation and initiative.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, and manage tasks proactively
• Strong IT skills, particularly with Excel, Word and adobe PDF.
• High attention to detail and strong numerical accuracy.
Desirable
• Previous work experience in an accountancy practice.
• Car owner with full driving licence
Benefits
• Competitive salary.

• Genuine progression opportunities as the team expands.
• Broad exposure to varied clients and tasks, offering strong professional development.
