This is an exciting opportunity to join the National Bail Information Service (BIS) as a Data Analyst.
This role sits within the National HMPPS Bail Information Service (BIS).
The National HMPPS Bail Information Service (BIS) is a dedicated and pro-active service, currently delivering across reception prisons and courts across England and Wales. Bail Information Officers provide relevant, objective and factual information to courts to support informed bail decisions, BIS Analysts focus on understanding and improving the performance, activity and delivery of the service through data and analysis.
Role Purpose
As a Data Analyst within the National HMPPS Bail Information Service, your central purpose will be to support the development, maintenance, and ongoing improvement of our data and analytical products. You will play a key role in ensuring the service has timely, accurate and meaningful information to support performance insights, operational decision making, and service development.
The successful candidate will be responsible for collating, organising, analysing, and presenting data from a range of sources, including spreadsheets and databases. Day to day activity will involve using analytical techniques in Excel (including pivot tables and formulas), extracting and transforming data through database queries and Power Query, and building high quality dashboards and data products using Power BI. You will also create clear and engaging presentations in PowerPoint, written reports, charts and visual materials that communicate insights to technical and non-technical colleagues.
You will be experienced in applying a practical, objective-driven approach to analysis, informed by best practice and statistics, translating raw data into actionable and accessible insights.
Key Responsibilities
• Collect, structure, and prepare data from spreadsheets, operational systems, and databases for use in analysis and reporting.
• Use Excel (including pivot tables and advanced formulas) and Power Query to cleanse, format, and combine data sets.
• Develop, maintain, and enhance Power BI dashboards and reporting tools to support decision making across the service.
• Produce regular and ad hoc management information, ensuring outputs are accurate, timely, and clearly presented.
• Create high quality charts, visuals, summaries, and presentations that communicate trends, operational insights, and performance information.
• Work with colleagues and Senior Analysts across the service to understand analytical and reporting needs, translating these into clear data products.
• Translate raw data into meaningful insights by applying a range of analytical methods.
• Support the continuous improvement of reporting processes, data flows, and documentation.
What You Will Bring
• Demonstrable experience in using Excel for data analysis, including data manipulation and cleansing, pivot tables, charts, formulas, familiarity with Power Query.
• Applied knowledge of a range of analytical techniques to explore data, draw out trends, and support operational decision making.
• Experience querying, extracting, or combining data from spreadsheets and databases.
• Ability to build and maintain Power BI dashboards and produce clear data visualisations.
• An organised, methodical approach to working with data, with exceptional attention to detail and excellent time management.
• Confidence in presenting and discussing analytical findings with different audiences.
• A collaborative working style, with the ability to engage effectively with colleagues and stakeholders from across the organisation.
