HM Courts & Tribunals Service (HMCTS) plays a vital role in delivering justice across the UK. High-quality administrative staff with strong customer service skills are essential to the effective operation of courts, tribunals and offices. The RoleWe are seeking an organised and reliable Administrative Officer to join a busy court environment. This role is key to supporting the progression of cases through the court and tribunal system and providing administrative support to judicial and operational teams.
You will work as part of a supportive team, undertaking a range of administrative and operational duties. While based at Newcastle County Court, some flexibility to support other local HMCTS offices may occasionally be required.
Key ResponsibilitiesAdministration

Preparing papers and files for court hearings, tribunals, meetings and training sessions

Producing court and tribunal documentation

Photocopying, filing, scanning and maintaining electronic and paper records

Creating and updating records on internal computer systems

Opening, sorting and dispatching post

Booking and preparing meeting rooms and supporting group activities
Drafting & Correspondence
-
Drafting standard letters, correspondence, minutes, notes and reports in line with guidelines
Court & Operational Support

Clerking civil and family courts, tribunals and hearings
-
Assisting court users and supporting listing and rota management
-
Handling face-to-face, telephone and written enquiries

Contacting relevant parties, serving court documents, collecting fines and fees (including chip and pin)

Working as part of a team to contribute to daily Team Information Board (TIB) meetings and problem-solving activities

Undertaking ad hoc roles within the band, such as Jury Bailiff Officer or Health & Safety roles
Casework Processing

Processing court orders, claims, fines, fees and legal aid documentation

Resulting courts accurately and working to workload targets for accuracy and throughput
Checking, Verifying & Data Handling

Checking documents, records and data for accuracy and compliance

Collecting and assembling information for reports, returns and statistics

Undertaking basic calculations, reconciling accounts and processing financial information as required
Customer Service & Communication

Communicating professionally with the judiciary, legal professionals, court users, external agencies and internal stakeholders

Delivering a prompt, polite and "right first time" service to all customers

Strong administrative and organisational skills

Excellent customer service and communication skills

Ability to manage multiple tasks accurately in a fast-paced environment

Confidence using computer systems and databases

Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Essential Qualifications (one of the following):

5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (or equivalent), including English and Maths

NVQ Level II in Business Administration

Relevant administrative experience
