The Opportunity
Join Barnsley College as a GCSE English Teacher and play a vital role in helping learners achieve their full potential. You will deliver GCSE and Functional Skills to a diverse range of learners, including 16–18-year-olds and adults, with some evening delivery required.
You’ll design and deliver engaging lessons that build confidence, develop essential communication skills, and support learners to achieve recognised qualifications. Working closely with colleagues, you’ll contribute to curriculum planning, develop innovative resources, and explore creative teaching methods that make English accessible and relevant.
Alongside teaching, you’ll provide academic and pastoral support, helping learners overcome barriers and develop resilience, independence, and self-belief.

About You

You will be an enthusiastic and adaptable English teacher who believes in making language and literature accessible, engaging and meaningful for every learner. You understand that English is more than a subject—it’s a life skill—and you are committed to helping our students gain both the confidence and competence to use it effectively in their studies, work and everyday life.

You should hold a recognised teaching qualification (Cert Ed, PGCE or equivalent) and a minimum of a Level 3 qualification in English. Experience of teaching GCSE and/or Functional Skills English is essential, ideally within a further education or alternative learning environment. You’ll have the ability to plan and deliver creative, learner-centred lessons that cater to a wide range of abilities and learning styles.

You will have strong classroom management skills and the ability to build positive, supportive relationships with learners who may face barriers to education. Patience, empathy and a genuine passion for helping others succeed will be at the heart of your teaching approach.

Collaboration is key in this role—you’ll work closely with colleagues across the Business team to share ideas, resources and good practice. You’ll also take an active role in developing curriculum content, experimenting with new delivery methods and contributing to strategies that enhance learner engagement and achievement.

Below is a list of some of the key skills, qualifications and experience we are seeking for this exciting opportunity.
