Summary


The post holder will be required to work autonomously in the ECT service of the Trust, providing skilled assistance to the Anaesthetist as per the College of anaesthetist guidelines. This includes the treatment area and all other areas within the ECT service. The operating department practitioner provides recovery care for patients after receiving ECT, having planned, implemented and assessed all aspects of their care within the service.

The post holder will support the senior staff, ensuring high standards of effective care are delivered to all patients within the ECT service. The post holder must have experience in theatre/anaesthetic practice and be prepared to take on responsibility as the sole operating department practitioner working within the ECT service and Trust.

The ODP will assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for patients undergoing ECT procedures. The ODP will repare the ECT anaesthetic room for treatment in relation to instrumentation, equipment and supplies required for the procedure, ensuring waste is kept to a minimum. In the case of anaesthetics ensure all necessary and emergency equipment is available and in working order. Also ensure equipment is checked routinely and maintained, and takes appropriate action with faulty equipment as per Trust policy.

• Maintains appropriate pharmacy stock levels and adheres to local Trust and National medication policies.
• Organise the provision of the relevant equipment required for clinical procedures. Manipulation of patients during clinical procedures, assembles instruments and equipment.
• Plans, implements and evaluates patients care in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
• Maintains the safety and well being of patients, their relatives and staff in accordance with Health and Safety policy.
• Ensure the Patient Record is completed in a timely and accurate way.
• Perform anaesthetic duties required for delivering ECT. Position and prepare the patients as required by the anaesthetist.
• Participates in the ordering of and training required for new equipment.
• Organise own time and be responsible for appropriate delegation of staff and duties.
• Maintain effective channels of communication at all times.
• Comply with Oxleas NHS Foundation Trust policies/procedures and in particular, issues relating to Health and Safety, COSSH, Incidents Reporting and the Data Protection Act.
• Report all accidents, incidents, complaints, and untoward incidents to the Band 7 ECT manager, and complete electronic reporting system (Datix).
• Act as specialist/link person having undergone relevant training sessions in your area of expertise.
• Deliver patient care in accordance with recognised standards of research based clinical practise.
• By precept and example, to ensure that the rights, dignity and confidentiality of the patient are protected at all times.
• Undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required.
• Understand and apply a holistic patient centred care approach, identifying and taking into account specialist clinical needs whilst the patient is in the ECT service.
• Able to act as a mentor for ODPs and if required provide clinical or day to day supervision to junior staff. May host student placements as required.
