Want to influence strategic decisions and deliver pragmatic legal advice in a leading mutual? We’re looking for a Senior Solicitor to join our dynamic Legal team in a flexible, part-time role. If you’re an experienced solicitor who values flexibility and wants to make a real impact in a collaborative, forward-thinking organisation, we’d love to hear from you.

Who Are We?

Not just another building society. Not just another job.

We're the fourth biggest building society in the UK and what makes us different is that we're a mutual organisation. We don't have shareholders; we're owned by our members.

Our colleagues say Skipton's a great place to work, and you could be one of them, bringing with you new ideas on how we can keep customers at the heart of what we do.

Whatever your background, and whatever your goals, we'll help you take the next step towards a better future.

You’ll join our Legal team, working closely with the Head of Legal – Homes & Money and collaborating with senior stakeholders across the Homes & Money divisions, Risk, and external legal providers. We act as a true partner to the commercial units, building proactive relationships and providing solutions-focused advice that enables progress- not obstacles.

What Will You Be Doing?

In this role, you’ll provide trusted, strategic legal advice and act as a proactive partner to the business. You’ll work autonomously at a senior level to:

  • Deliver accurate, timely, and commercially pragmatic legal advice across Homes & Money divisions and enabling functions.
  • Support product development and updates to terms & conditions, policies and processes, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead on major regulatory projects and horizon scanning for legal changes.
  • Manage escalated complaints, disputes and litigation, preserving privilege and mitigating risk.
  • Advise on property, intellectual property, and other complex legal matters impacting the business.
  • Collaborate with external legal providers to ensure value for money and effective cost control.
  • Build strong relationships with senior stakeholders and provide mentoring and coaching to colleagues across the team.
  • Contribute to knowledge management by creating templates, precedents and delivering training to stakeholders.

What Do We Need From You?

To succeed in this role, you’ll bring strong technical expertise and the ability to influence at a senior level. We’re looking for someone who can combine legal knowledge with a pragmatic, commercial approach. You’ll need:

  • To be a qualified solicitor in England and Wales (or equivalent in another common law jurisdiction).
  • You’ll likely have around five years’ PQE, but we’re open to hearing from experienced solicitors who can operate confidently and independently.
  • Proven experience delivering high-quality legal services in a regulated environment, either in-house or in private practice. Financial services experience would be highly beneficial to support a smooth transition into the role.
  • A real self-starter with resilience and confidence when engaging with senior stakeholders and navigating complex conversations.
  • Ability to act as a mentor and coach to the wider team, sharing expertise and supporting development.
  • Strong communication and influencing skills, with the ability to provide pragmatic solutions under pressure.
  • Knowledge of UK financial services legal and regulatory environment.
  • Ability to maintain discretion and confidentiality.

What’s In It For You?

Skipton values work/life balance and we are proud to support hybrid and flexible working, where possible. We have a newly refurbished head office in Skipton, North Yorkshire, which offers a vibrant and collaborative working space.

We have a range of other benefits available to you including:

  • Annual discretionary bonus scheme.
  • 25 days standard annual leave + bank holidays + rising 1 day per year of service to a maximum of 30 days.
  • Holiday trading scheme allowing the ability to buy and sell additional annual leave days.
  • Matching employer pension contribution (up to 10% per annum).
  • Colleague mortgage (conditions apply).
  • Salary sacrifice scheme for hybrid & electric car.
  • A commitment to training and development.
  • Private medical insurance for all our colleagues.
  • 3 paid volunteering days per annum.
  • Diverse and inclusive colleague networks available for you to join including our Carers and Pride Alliance groups.
  • We care about your health and wellbeing – we provide a range of benefits that support this including cycle to work initiative and discounted gym membership.

If you’re ready to make a real impact in a collaborative, forward-thinking organisation, apply today.
