Surgical SDEC is looking for Band 3 health care assistants to join our team.
The successful applicant should be highly motivated with good interpersonal skills and be able to work under pressure and work well within the team. They should have a keen desire to provide and maintain a high standard of care at all times
Under the supervision of a registered nurse assisting the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of care for patients and their families/carer.
The post holder will take undertake a range of tasks and duties as delegated by a registered nurse
As a Band 3 HCA you will be responsible for providing high standards of care. Your role will involve assisting the nursing staff with some clinical duties. Training will be arranged for you to achieve these skills. Being a Band 3 HCA also means you will lead by example and supervise and support junior members of staff to improve and maintain high standards of care.

Patient Care and Clinical Support
• Assist in delivering personal and clinical care under nurse supervision, including hygiene, nutrition, and mobility support.
• Monitor and record vital signs: temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiratory rate, oxygen saturations.
• Perform routine observations such as weight, height, urinalysis, and pregnancy testing.
• Support patients during the perioperative period.
• Measure and record fluid input/output.
• Assist with safe patient movement and positioning.
Clinical Procedures
• Undertake routine phlebotomy and cannulation (where trained).
• Perform venepuncture, ECGs, and blood collections as required.
• Prepare and assist in clinical procedures ensuring patient comfort and safety.
• Perform simple wound dressingunder the direction and supervision of a registered nurse.
Team Collaboration and Communication
• Work within a multidisciplinary team to carry out investigations and deliver care.
• Communicate effectively with patients, relatives, and colleagues.
• Report changes in patient condition to senior staff.
• Act as a patient advocate, maintaining dignity and respect.
Documentation and Record Keeping
• Accurately document care in patient records
• Maintain clear, concise, and confidential records in both paper and electronic formats.
• Ensure compliance with organisation policies regarding documentation.
Clerical Duties
• Undertake a range of clerical duties to support or cover for the Ward Clerk to ensure smooth service operations.
• Reception and telephone duties, handling patient queries and directing calls.
• Use basic computer skills to update patient records and ward systems.
• Complete patient admission and discharge on the electronic system.
• Obtain case notes, and other patient documents as needed.
• File documents accurately and efficiently.
• Complete maintenance and repair request forms.
• Monitor and maintain stock levels of stationery, ward provisions, clean linen, etc., and complete requisition forms for restocking.
• Provide cover for absent colleagues by undertaking their duties when necessary.
Training and Development
• Participate in induction and ongoing training to maintain competencies.
• Complete required clinical and clerical competencies within specified timeframes.
• Support and supervise junior staff and new colleagues as needed.
Health and Safety Compliance
• Adhere to infection control and health and safety policies.
• Report incidents, accidents, and safety concerns promptly.
• Participate in audits and quality assurance activities.
