About the Role
We are seeking a professional and reliable Court Usher to support the smooth running of court operations. As the first point of contact for court users, you will play a key role in ensuring hearings run efficiently and that all parties receive clear guidance and support.
In this customer-facing role, you will regularly interact with the judiciary, legal representatives, members of the public, and vulnerable individuals. You will also perform essential administrative tasks to help maintain professional court services.
This role requires someone who can stay calm under pressure, follow detailed procedures, and respond quickly and professionally to unexpected situations.
Key Responsibilities
Administration & Court Support- Prepare and maintain court/hearing rooms.
- Collect and deliver files and document bundles to judiciary and clerks.
- Support colleagues and judiciary outside of court times.
- Operate recording equipment and maintain accurate hearing records.
- Update and display hearing lists across notice boards.
- General administrative tasks, including use of computers and switchboard.
- Completing standard forms and basic drafting (acknowledgements, receipts, confirmations, warrants, etc.).
- Managing post: opening, sorting, distributing, and dispatching.
- Ensure courtrooms are stocked with necessary forms and stationery.
- Manage distribution of stationery across the offices.
- Enter data accurately and check against guidelines or templates.
- Manage straightforward financial tasks such as petty cash or jury payments (under instruction).
- Operate office and court equipment including computers, scanners, fax machines, photocopiers, franking machines, and recording devices.
- Welcome and support court users: judiciary, juries, solicitors, barristers, police, witnesses, and the public.
- Escort individuals to and from courtrooms.
- Provide clear information about proceedings.
- Call parties into hearings in priority order and coordinate with Court Clerks and Legal Advisers.
- Handle face-to-face and telephone enquiries, ensuring accurate message-taking.
- Keep court users informed of changes such as courtroom allocations or hearing times.
- Prepare rooms for hearings, tribunals, trials, and meetings.
- Clear down rooms at the end of the day.
- Use electronic diaries to manage schedules.

- Ability to remain professional and sensitive when dealing with vulnerable or distressed individuals.
- Comfortable following detailed procedures and maintaining firm boundaries when required.
- Reliable team player with good time management.
- Flexible and willing to work at other local courthouses or HMCTS offices when needed.
