More detail about the role The fellowship is a clinical and research training position for a fixed term period. . During this time the fellows will work with the eight consultants in the Exeter Knee reconstruction unit, who specialise in complex and revision arthroplasty of the knee and soft tissue knee surgery. The aim of the fellowship is to prepare the individual for a sub-specialist career in complex arthroplasty of the lower limb, and it is expected that by the end of the fixed term period, the fellow should be able to plan and independently execute complex and revision knee arthroplasty cases. There will also be extensive exposure to soft tissue/sport knee surgery and other joint preservation procedures. Exeter was one of the first centers in the UK to have a Mako robot, and now has 4, located at the Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust., the Southwest Ambulatory Orthopaedic Center (SWAOC) and at the Exeter Nuffield Hospital. Fellows will receive training in robotic assisted knee surgery during the fellowship. Fellows also have a commitment to the general Orthopaedic trauma on call rota. The Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre at the RD&E has a long history of orthopaedic innovation and excellence. It is a thriving department with significant subspecialty expertise. It is an academic department with significant subspecialty expertise and is affiliated to the University of Exeter Medical School. There is a significant research component in the fellowship, and it is expected that the fellow will complete two supervised research projects for publication in peer-reviewed journals, and write a review article for publication in a journal or book. The Exeter Knee Reconstruction Unit (EKRU) manages all knee problems including sports injuries, early and advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, revision surgery and complex lower limb trauma. They act as a tertiary referral unit for the South West for complex arthroplasty and soft tissue knee surgery. EKRU has a strong background in research and is involved in a number of ongoing randomised controlled trials including all aspects of knee surgery. The team includes 8 consultants, 3 senior fellows, 1 specialist registrar, 4 extended scope physiotherapists and 2 surgical care practitioners.
